Ali, why do you say that the film is not DVD 18? I thought arsh said it was?

He also later said it's not a ‘flipper’ & DVD-9 - on a DVD-18 the film is stored on both sides. In terms of storage capacity each dual layered contains ~9GB of data - a DVD-18 has 9GB on each side while DVD-9 only has 9GB on one side and usually the other side there is a picture of the film.

We should write in our complaints about the poor quality of the Lagaan DVD to Columbia and atleast let them know that we do care about quality. In fact we should also email them a link to this thread so they can become aware of how their not doing justice to the Lagaan DVD only helps promote piracy. Also we should let them know of our dissapointment regarding the quality of the DVD and demand from them that they treat any future Indian DVDs with the same kind of respect they give to other Region 1 DVDs. Even other foreign language DVDs from Columbia are of very good quality and there is no reason why they should have given less importance to an Indian film.
I personally had been looking forward to this Columbia release of Lagaan with a lot of anticipation and I am very dissapointed. Dissapointed to the extent of actually feeling 'let down and cheated' by Columbia. Columbia has been known to make some of the best DVDs from even amongst the overall excellent region 1 DVDs and for them to do such injustice to a Modern Indian classic is a shame.

I suggest we wait till someone has seen the DVD on a high
end system so the quality can be reliably judged. If it's
dual layer only it will have visible compression artifacts
and sharpness will be reduced. It's likely to have edge
enhancement as well as CT adds it regularly. Noise reduction
maybe, maybe not.

Yeah, no need to jump the gun, ok. calm down everybody it probably won't be as bad as described. BTW Arsh why did you start that dvd 18 rumour anyway???

First of all great site! I didn’t know such a site existed until recently. Secondly Indian DVDs are the shitter than shit! I can't believe the mess they make on them; pure selfishness, greediness and incompetence rulez these guys including DEI!

And Lagaan DVD; one of my favorite films of last year and have been patiently been waiting for the official release especially after read on this site its going to Colombia Tristar release. And so much mis-information on this title;

Indianwatchdog.com says (and still does!!);
“Lagaan DVD specs
1. Digitally Mastered Audio & Anamorphic Video Widescreen Presentation
2. Audio: Original Language is a mix of English and Hindi 5.1
3. Subtitles: English, French, Spanish, Portuguese, Chinese, Korean and Thai
Disc 2 specs
4. Deleted Scenes
5. Weblink
6. Filmographies
7. Interactive Menus
8. Scene Selections “

WTF??!

Anyway kind of disappointed by arsh’s views but I think of it this way, since the dampers are out at least when you get it can only be better then described! LOL. I wait till I see more reviews on this before buying – you reckon Colombia Tristar will release a special edition if this does well? I’m sure Amir and wife & co talked about a dual disc edition on PlanetBollywood while back – what happened to that ???

I sadly concur with rana's specs from widescreen, it is right, they don't say 2 disc!!for sure!!
(My apology, it is not dvd 18 as i originally thought before opening the package!!)I gave u guys some early on lead and I am not fond of wasting my time spreading rumors for FUN!!!It is single sided dual layer!!consistent with dvd 9 as described above!!
Now for MH, i do have a great respect for his opinion and expertise!!Clap!!
May I add, i have a pretty high end system and i"ll not hesitate to comment that it does have artifacts as MH mentioned esp on motion, source has not been even cleaned properly so show significant specs, wear tear, esp on titles etc!!
Bare bone dvd, I am SORRY!!not of CT class..period!!
If Lagaan could not turn hindi dvd sky towards RESPECT!!!I am not optimistic for ASOKA etc!!or may be any thing in the future!!
people who like dynamic surround sound might be disappointed too!!as it is not like action movie track, more so like a good drama with good detail, seperation and clarity!!!

2 disc??coming out!!Shame for AAMIR KHAN if this happens using shitty strategies to make money!!!

Bottom line, I have'nt played it on comuter dvd rom that i have yet!!asI dont have screen capture soft ware and did not have time to watch the whole 4 hrs movie!!!

But 2 more weeks, some body will do it, on small screens and direct view tv it is going to look very nice!!
BTW!!there is a preview shot at indiancdstore.com in windowmediafile that looks good!!!watch it!!

Hi All

Without trying to sound stupid :) the region 2 release should be in PAL. As very few Indian DVDs have been released in PAL yet will Europe based viewers notice a marked increase in quality compared with the usual NTSC releases? :wot:

Do you watch your DVDs on a TV or with a projector?
Are you 16:9 capable? Progressive playback?
Would you say "Lagaan" is worse looking than "Fiza/DEI"?
cheers

I very much doubt it., difference between other NTSC and PAL DVDs are minimal, if you analyse to the nth degree then you might notice the difference. On normal TVs the difference between NTSC and PAL are negligible.

I Picked up Laggan from Local Best Buy this morning. Great Movie. Mediocre Video Transfer. Good DD5.1.
NOT UPTO COLUMBIA TRISTAR STANDARD.
Worse than Crouching Tiger Hidden Dragen.
NOT WORTH $22.99 I PAID.

The difference between PAL and NTSC is usually dominated by
differences in the transfer quality, compression etc. and
not the TV standard itself. If the transfer is the same and
everything else as well PAL will have more flickering in
bright scenes at 50HZ and the sound is speeded up. It should
also have some more vertical resolution (~100 more scanlines
for 4:3 material). You have to compare the DVDs to see which
looks better. There are no strict rules.

Sorry Michael! for delayed responce to your reply, I watch my dvd on rear projection HDTV, Pioneer elite pro 710,64 inch(in my knowledge, one of highly acclaimed in industry tv), with prog scan Sony DSN 400P dvd player, in prog scan mode, with progscan 420p component hook up!!!
and i'll say still FIZA by spark/dei was better dvd transfer than lagaan, beside if squishing was problem or not!!
CTHD was not my favourite transfer as i found it far below superior than CT's FIFTH ELEMENT and MASK OF ZORO etc!!!

LAGAAN is a BIG LET DOWN by CT and a SHAME and SLAP on HINDI DVD quality expectations..BETRYAL..i would say!!I think their GANDHI was a better dvd than this one, i am not comparing it with LAWRENCE OF ARABIA..that's the treatment LAGAAN desrved or at least like GANDHI!!rest you guys will find out soon!!!I am depressed and disappointed!!
