My post is for those who want to upgrade their system.

If you have totally light controlled room and have some time to spare, you are in for treat if you upgrade to a Projector based system. It does not cost more than the price of a HDTV. Depending on your budget you can buy a used projector for as little as $500 + a Progressive DVD player like RP 62 for $200 + a homemade screen for $50. I doubt if you ever able to pull back from the world of Home Theater after this. Assuming you already has an Audio setup.

My first home theater is some thing similar to the above setup. I spent around $ 10,000 to my current setup but I was equally happy with my first setup as long as I had it.

I always dreamed of Home Theater since I was a kid. Once I started living here in US about 4 years ego I started reading about the stuff. I spent long hours of reading from Homeheaterspot, Hometheaterforum and AVSForum.

I helped couple of friends and collogue to setup their home theater. I am afraid to show my setup to my friends and relatives, as most of them want me help to build their home theater.

I always watch a movie at nigh between 9 to 11 every day on week days (only Hollywood movies and If I don't have to tweak the system). Most of the time I watch alone except the weekend where I watch Indian movies with my family.

I am here to share my experience with you fellow zulm's as I want to give back some thing that you all gave me. I never would have started my Hindi DVD connection with out zulm.

I am open to help any body who wants my help and I invite you all those who wants to see a decent setup.

Congress,
I paid around $4000 for my current projector with an extra bulb and $1000 for my HTPC and along with RP56 ($250) and 2 different screens ($150 + $200) with masking. Around $500 to hang black curtains around my basement HT room to feel it like a theater.
And the rest of the money I spent for Audio.

my only concern is for front proj syatem, is it demands absolute dark room, otherwise you will be better off with rear proj tv! more brighter!! and can take light!!

otherwise big screen is a bonus, how big still limitation based upon , quality nd type of projector, CRT, LCD, DLP, HDTV capable? etc!!

PLUS PIANO makes a nice DLP projector for 3K!

Arsh,
You are right about the dark room. I have mentioned it in the beginning. There is an unending discussion about which one is better. But for me both are different kind of animals. If you watch lot of TV, you are better off with HDTV. If you watch lot of movies on DVD and have a dark room you better of with projector. But for me if I buy a HDTV, I will keep it in my living room not in my HT room

YES!! iF U CAN AFFORD BOTH AND HAVE ROOM TO PLACE THEM, AND CAN HAVE A DEDICTATED HOME THEATRE ROOM WITH PROJECTOR, NOTHING LIKE IT!

AS far HDTV is concerned you can have a tube based too, smaller or bigger now, and there are front projectors with HDTV CAPABILITY too....I agree for movies, more fun on bigger screen, and on proj u can do both pal/ntsc!!like plasmas!

Arsh,
My projector is also capable of resolving HDTV resolution. I do have a cable with HDTV, but it does not offer many channels (except HBOHD and ShowtimeHD).

Just to add my 2 cents.

The DVD player I would strongly recommend, specially if the budget is a concern, the Panasonic RP82. It is an excellent value for money DVD player and one can easily find it online in the US for approx $200. The player has Progressive output and as an added bonus it does DVD Audio also. By the way for those who might not have Dolby Digital/DTS Receiver, the player also has built in Dolby Digital/DTS decoding with 5.1 channel analog outputs in addition to the Digital Optical and Coaxial outputs.

Sanjay,

I do accept Pan RP82 is better for the money. I have the first generation model RP56 which is quite good and the replacement model for that is RP62 and RP82 is a step up model with DVD A and build in decoder. I have done extensive testing by playing with these models and all the 3 models have the same video quality nothing less or nothing more. As most of the stores do not carry RP82 in North America, only option is to buy it from an online store. If you already have a decoder it is not worth going to the trouble of ordering from online unless you want DVD A capability.

You can also buy a cheap progressive scan DVD player (Cyberhome CH -500) with a 5.1 decoder built in from Best Buy for $70 this weekend. This player can also be made all region (play DVD's from all around the world) by a simple remote hack. With a cd-rom based firmware upgrade it is also supposed to play DVD-Audio. I have not upgraded my player so I cannot comment the the claim from the manufacturer.

I too have spent over $8000 for my home theater and if you can afford it, it is well worth it. I have seen cheap HT cost about $1000. A controlled lighting room , a used pj for about $500 - $700 (see Ebay), screen material for Jo-Ann fabric $30,
and an all in one DVD system, is all it takes to make a HT. Oh and don't forget the pop and popcorn.

rp-82 carries my recomendation too, video quality, controls, tweaks, a bit better than rp-56, -62 is same, audio section is better due to dvd audio, decoders, built in..who cares!!
both coax and toslink out..is a big plus!!

Aesthetics!!are kinda my concern, i never liked its silver color and built, and remote is terrible..so returned it..but it is good to watch, pseudo prog hindi films!
