Disappointed to hear it's only a single disc - even more just single DVD-9 disc. BTW the pirate is not anamorphic and has not got 5.1 sound – this pirate here – unless you’re referring to some different pirate.

I’ve not seen Lagaan at all but regarding languages – wasn’t parts of it in English? That’s what the English/Hindi spec was about – not a new English dub for this DVD.

Still I’ll wait and see.

Hi1 Ali! thanks for input!

My impression was that PIRATED version of LAGAAN had true 5.1, I agre picture is non anamorphic widescreen but was pretty good and way better from most of the original stuff!!
I thought MK was pseudo 5.1 but picture was not bad either, but out of two, LAGAAN was a better pirated dvd!!IMO!

Picture on this original as it is anamorphic with dvd 9 and poor bit rate! may be!stretching 30% better on widescreen TV as my viewing is on widescreen HDTV with Prog scan DVD player any way! I found pirated LAGAAN ACCEPTABLY GOOD DVD? But we have to Go for Comparison? to see how much better we have this original one!I dont have the pirated copy to compare and i don't want to blow money again for comparison..period.

Seems like a cop-out from Colombia - I doubt this got treated the same way as many of its other R1 titles – it was always going to be a problematic DVD is terms of picture if only a single dual layered disc was used. The running time justified either a 2xDVD-9 or single DVD-18 for the film – but alas that didn’t happen. I don’t have the pirate either to make an comparison – I thought the pirate was single layered DVD – not sure now ??? Makes it all the more remarkable if it is. MK pirate DVD is decent – that was a single layered disc – and has decent pro-logic surround sound (not proper 5.1 though).

I probably get the Lagaan DVD by next week – so will take a fuller loot at it then. There's still Asoka! :doze:

That is absolutely correct. There is no English dub of the film. The English - Hindi 5.1 in the specifications is referring to the fact that the film was in Hindi and had some parts in English.

We should write in our complaints about the poor quality of the Lagaan DVD to Columbia and atleast let them know that we do care about quality. In fact we should also email them a link to this thread so they can become aware of how their not doing justice to the Lagaan DVD only helps promote piracy. Also we should let them know of our dissapointment regarding the quality of the DVD and demand from them that they treat any future Indian DVDs with the same kind of respect they give to other Region 1 DVDs. Even other foreign language DVDs from Columbia are of very good quality and there is no reason why they should have given less importance to an Indian film.
I personally had been looking forward to this Columbia release of Lagaan with a lot of anticipation and I am very dissapointed. Dissapointed to the extent of actually feeling 'let down and cheated' by Columbia. Columbia has been known to make some of the best DVDs from even amongst the overall excellent region 1 DVDs and for them to do such injustice to a Modern Indian classic is a shame.

I remember someone on this forum confirming with CT that the release of Lagaan was to be a dual disc release. I guess if loads of people complain they may do a dual disc region 2 release ???

But seriously - I'm depressed :(

WIDESCREEN REVIEW SUBSCRIBER SITE has all the info for LAGAAN. Their measured DVD AR is same as theatrical AR (i.e. anamorphic DVD is not squashed), Audio is DD 5.1 in theatrical as well as DVD, Run Time is 224 min.

Looks like a perfect DVD to me.

Will visit my local BestBuy to check if they have it. If it's there, I'll surely purchase it (even though it seems to be a disappointing release) and will post screen grabs. So hopefully they have it. Looks like I'll have to spend some money this weekend as according to Jolly, DDLJ will also be out. Damn I need a job!

I suggest we wait till someone has seen the DVD on a high
end system so the quality can be reliably judged. If it's
dual layer only it will have visible compression artifacts
and sharpness will be reduced. It's likely to have edge
enhancement as well as CT adds it regularly. Noise reduction
maybe, maybe not.
