One good film, Yes. Still has a long way to go to be on this list.

Agree with you 100%.. but as you said.. long way to go to be on the list. I added him just to show faith and support on his work.

And also agree with ALI on the foundation of amitabh's career, there is big time hand on Manmohan Desai.. may not qualify for the list, but can't be ignored either..

  :;):

RE: Manmohan Desai, I agree with Ali here. He is a great director that has made some great movies. Amar Akbar Anthony and Naseeb, along with Sholay and Shaan are reference quality hindi movies.

Why else would they keep on showing them on channel 4?
They are the building blocks of what is now known of as Bollywood.

Mukul S Anand has also made some great super hit movies like Hum. Agneepath also was a brilliant film along with Khuda Gawah. It is also worth noting that the films were made back to back Agneepath 1990, Hum 1991, Khuda Gawah 1992.

To produce 3 hit movies in 3 years is not easy work I can tell you that for nothing. Sultanat and Izzatdar may not have been huge hits but were great movies all the same.

Subhash Ghai also maybe a bit overated but it he has produced some fine work creating classics like Ram Lakhan, Saudagar and Hero. Taal was also a good musical, I thought.
Pardes was pretty average but served its purpose marking the 50 years of independance or whatever it was. It was a commercial movie that did what it was supposed to.
Yaadein was totally rubbish but all good directors have their bad days.
These 3 directors definetly deserve to be in that list.

Kundan Shah has produced 3 excellent films in Kya Kehna, Kabhi Haan Kabhi Naa and Jaane Bhi Do Yaaro 1 average movie: Dil hai tumhara and one shit movie: Hum to mohobat karega. Im sure there are a few more good ones to come before his time is up. KHKH and JBDY are regarded as classics and im sure are in many all time top 10 lists.

Gotta rush right now so I am just going to reserve this space for my response later. In the meantime my apologies for my earlier post, since on second thoughts I can see how my post sounded a bit offensive.

hmmm...i'm really suprised that one director isn't mentioned here even though he has probably given two cult classics of his time -MPK and HAHk..yes I am talking about Sooraj Barjatya. If aditya could be mentioned here, surely sooraj deserves a place here..sure HSSH was a rehash of HAHk..but come on the first two were incredible from an entertainment/family value perspective..For me and my friends, this guy single handedly got us all to start watching hindi movies

My list (no order):

Sooraj Barjatya (for truly entertaining us)
Satyajit Ray (for his handling of sensitive themes)
Mani Ratnam (for skills in setting a perfect tone for his movies)
Ram Gopal Varma ( a risk taker)
Chopras (B.R. and Yash) ( a lot of their movies are classics)
Raj Kapoor (to this day, people are copying (atleast trying to:)) this man)
Guru Dutt (for his eye to detail)
Sanjay Bhansali (sorry I am of the new generation and while he like sooraj has made only 3 movies, all three were a visual treat to the eyes..not many people has his ability while at the same time he might not have the abilities of many..still a director in command)
Subash Ghai (while his movies suck a lot, he did have the midas touch and made some amazing movies early on)
Raj Kumar Santhoshi (has made certain amazing movies not to mention my favourite comedy of all-time AAA)

We should also look forward to the future films of Farhan Akhtar and Dev Benegal.

What about Basu Chatterjee? Chhoti Si Baat, Rajinigandha, and Chitchor are great films.

Hey!!!

No one mentioned Kanti Shah, KC Bokadia, or T. Rama Rao, and Mehul Kumar!!! These are the true geniuses of hindi cinema. I don't think that a Raj Kapoor or Mehboob Khan can even hold a candle to these guys! :D
