Karan Johar: Another tearjerker

The latest buzz going around is that the script that Karan Johar has penned down for assitant Nikhil Advani to direct is loosely based on Hrishikesh Mukherjee's seventies hit Anand. Shah Rukh Khan is to play the cancer patient the role that was originally played by Rajesh Khanna. And Saif Ali Khan is to be Babu Moshai the role played by Amitabh Bachchan. Be prepared for another tearjerker if you please!

:baaa: MUSH! aur woh bhi SAALA!! 2 Number!

Karan Johar remaking a Hrishikesh Mukherjee film? With SRK in Rajesh Khanna's role? Okay, so RK wasn't a brilliant actor, but I don't think this sounds very good at all.

Wow strong statement.......but IMHO RK was unbeatable in those soft romantic roles....and his performance in ANAND is non pareil.....and Kaka was quite the experimenter too...he did roles like SACCHA JHOOTA, BAWARCHI and AAVISHKAR without qualms...in any case Johar trying to do a Hrishi-da is quite sad....weren't there rumours too that Anant Mahadevan was trying to collaborate with the ailing Hrishida to repeat some of his earlier magic....but he finally gave us a tepid DIL VIL PYAR VYAR....

Just a quiz on Anand.

Who was the actor, that Rajesh Khanna's character was written for??

Don't know why that great actor didn't act in the movie.

Wow, I didn't know that. Is that why the film was dedicated to Raj Kapoor?

The role was written for Raj Kapoor in mind but due to some reasons Raj was sick during that period and it was thought that hero die in the end will be bad omen for Raj Kapoor. Raj was keen to do it. I think no one would have done justice to this role other than Rajesh khanna. recently I watched this movie with my 12 year old son who is of this view that though this is a 30 year old but still he thinks this is the best Hindi movie he has ever seen.

How old would Raj Kapoor have been when Anand was shooting? The film works better with a younger man in the title role.

You have got to be kidding with that remark. Rajesh Khanna is one of the all time great actors of Indian cinema without doubt. He certainly ranks amongst the top ten, on the all time list. The versatality of roles portrayed convincingly by him is parralleled only by a few others in this industry. Quite honestly in my opinion there is not a single actor in Bollywood today who could do even half the justice to the role portrayed by Rajesh Khanna in Anand.

A list of films that showcase the versatality and greatness of Rajesh Khanna as an actor.

In no particular order:
1) Anand
2) Amar Prem
3) Baawarchi
4) Sucha Jhoota
5) Namak Haram
6) Avtaar
7) Ittefaq
8) Aradhna
9) Aavishkar
10) Dushman
11) Baharon Ke Sapne
12) Roti
13) Dhanwan
14) Kati Patang
15) Aap Ki Kasam
16) Haathi Mere Saathi
17) Do Raaste
18) Daag
19) Aakhir Kyon?
20) Thodisi Bewafai
21) Dard
22) Apna Desh
23) Agar Tum Na Hote
24) Amardeep
25) Red Rose
26) Prem Kahani
27) Anuraag
28) Safar
29) Prem Nagar

Anand, indeed was conceieved with Raj Kapoor in mind for the title role. Hrishikesh Mukherjee and Raj Kapoor were very close friends and the film was concieved quite a bit earlier than when it finally got made with Rajesh Khanna. It was Raj Kapoor's wife who had objected to him playing a role portraying a man who dies from cancer. By the way it was Raj Kapoor himself who recommended to Hrishikesh Mukherjee that Rajesh Khanna play the title role. After the first screening of the film, Hrishikesh and Raj Kapoor had commented that no other actor could have played the role as effectively as Rajesh Khanna had. It was only due to politics that Rajesh Khanna was cheated out of the National Award that year, although he did get the Filmfare Award for Best Actor.
