What we owe to Hindi movies.
I am wondering the response of this topic.
Yes indeed we owe lot to the Hindi movies. Isn't it that it is only the Hindi movies which now is keeping us in contact with the our culture. I have seen especially people living in overseas that get diluted or corrupted with the western culture. thanks to Hindi movies which is keeping us to our roots . It is not me but I have seen even the kids born and brought up in the western culture get attached to their culture because of Hindi movies. When I listen to old song or watch old movies that is the only thing that makes me nostalgic and takes me back to my old memories. We owe a lot to bollywood from an ordinary technician to Director.

agree with you gautam!

only wish they would continue to make decent movies.. no offence to anyone, but it's really hard to see a decent movie now-a-days. i dont know about others but most of the current movies focuses on multiple songs. and most of the time they appear to be redundant.

recently watched meghna gulzar's "filhaal", expecting to see some traditional gulzar treatment. even though dissapointed to see no gulzar traces but definitely pleased to see it is out of the ordinary.

we all do owe a lot of the indian film industries. thank you! my root isn't from india, but that's the closest thing i can see in north-america reminding of my roots.

That may be so, but some Indian film shamlessly ape western culture. They also give a distorted 'bubble-gum' view of Indian Culture, which we all know is not real. For example all that Americanisation of films like KKHH, style, etc showing Indians over-done in western designer gear, trying too hard to be more american than Americans themselves, saying 'shit' every few minutes doesn't do much for keeping us in touch with our Indian culture. I believe that's the reason they are not taken seriously, but still we see them and think "why is the director doing this? what is he trying to prove?" But for young people who may not know better they even copy what they see in these films.

Films like Monsoon weding show the real middle class India of today and simple show it, as it is, without the need to impress westerners or easteners (however this is NOT Bollywood).

I totally agree with you. Its annoying to hear actors constantly saying "shit" in hindi movies. Well that's one of the things that bothers me and another would be the bias that directors/screenwriters have against the American Indians. Most of 'em are portrayed as either stupid or evil (in some cases both).
As for what Gautam said:

I agree with you when you say that movies brings kids closer to their culture. I've also seen people really getting to know their culture because of hindi movies.

One thing that I certainly owe to Hindi movies is picking up the language. My family's Malayalee, so we only speak Malayalam or English around the house. But just by watching movies and listening to the songs (and trying to find translations to them online), I've been able to pick up enough Hindi (colloquial that is) that I can understand a film for the most part now without subtitles. I guess that's one way it does keep you in touch with what you're missing by not being in India. 'Cause over there, even if I lived in Kerala, I would be expected to learn English, Malayalam, and Hindi in school.
