Surly there were much better Indian films to offer??
Devdas was average, but it wasn't the best on offer! That's the trobule with the Indian film industry it always chosses the wrong films based on thier budgets and not thier script!

I mean to think of K3G as a potiential Oscar Nominee for India shows how ppor these guys really think!

What about Indian films like
Company (Hindi)
Kasi (Malayalam)
Everybody Says I'm Fine (Hindi/English)
Azhagi (Tamil)
The Warrior.........

(and I'm sure people on this forum can think of other better movies then I have just done!!!)

What a pathetic choice.... sad day for Hindi movies indeed !

I am sure this movie will not get pass even the nomination stage !...

On the contrary if it does get past... then there is a chance some Hollywood company may pick this film....and ....(sorry I am dreaming too much ) :(

Devdas?!?!?!? K3G?!??!?!

Thank God they didn't choose from the most successful films of last year - or we may have seen Gadar being sent off!!!

And if I'm not wrong, didn't Sushma Shiromanee make a pathetic film ages ago called Kanoon with Ajay Devgan and Urmila Matondkar?

It comes to no surprise that after last year´s Lagaan, this year´s biggest film will be sent to the Oscar´s as India´s official entry.

The announcment came today, courtesy of Peter Martis who will doing the publicity for the film which features Shah Rukh Khan, Aishwarya Rai and Madhuri Dixit.

Devdas turned out to be the biggest success this year, though due to budget constraints was not the biggest grosser. While Lagaan failed to win the Oscar for India last year, it did India proud. We await to see Devdas do the same.

K3G? Come on. Didn't they submit Jeans a few years back?

Does anyone know what the Tamil and Bengali films were?

Unfortunately, this was going to happen. The commitee tends to avoid regional films (Goodbye Kannathil Muthamital) and only goes for major Box Office hits (Goodbye LOBS). I'm surprised KKKG was in that list (it's last year's film, I think) and Company wasn't.

Are you joking? Road was utter shit...

I loved Devdas, but I would rather see movies like Company or Kannathil Muthamittal go to the Oscars. Anyhow, I highly doubt Devdas will even get nominated, and once February of 2003 comes around. Alot of psycho Shah Rukh Khan fans will be disappointed and will feel stupid for over-hyping this news day in & day out.

Devdas was the most well known internationally of this years releases. Take into the account that it premiered at cannes and won many appraises by some critics, It makes sense to send this movie to the oscars although it wasnt necessarily the best. I somehow doubt that it will win. Lagaan was a much better movie and it didnt win. What chance has devdas got?
BTW this is my 100th Post of complete bullsh*t

How was Devdas selected?
Sanjay Leela Bhansali's mega opus pipped other Indian movies to represent India at the Oscars

*** 3 V -STRONG CONTENDORS:Kannathil Mutthamittal, Manda Meyer Upakhyan and Saanjhbatir Roopkathara --- to the post.

Devdas is India's official entry to the Oscars and its maker Sanjay Leela Bhansali is bursting with joy.

The Rs 500 million extravaganza adapted from Sarat Chandra Chattopadhyay's novel about a frustrated lover's masochistic journey into despair, alcoholism and death has pipped six others --- Kabhi Khushi Kabhie Gham, The Legend Of Bhagat Singh, Agni Varsha, Kannathil Mutthamittal, Manda Meyer Upakhyan and Saanjhbatir Roopkathara --- to the post.

Before the euphoria over this selection ensues, let us try to understand how Devdas got picked as the official Indian entry for the 75th Annual Academy Awards.

First, it must be understood that while it is dubbed an 'official' representative of Indian cinema, the Government of India and the Ministry of Information and Broadcasting has nothing to do with this selection.

The task of choosing the Indian entry is entrusted to the Film Federation of India (FFI), a body that represents various film associations and accepts nominations from different regional bodies for the purpose of choosing the one film that will go to the Oscars. This means that the selection is made from among the films that are sent to the FFI. This year apparently, out of the 1,000-odd films made in the country, only seven were sent to the FFI and Devdas got selected from among these.

According to Suparn Sen, secretary, FFI, "We have no control over the number of films that come to us. One year, we got just one film. So it became India's official entry by default."

Which basically means that if the best films made in the country are not sent by the respective regional bodies to the FFI, they stand no chance of being selected for the Oscars.

The jury, according to Sen, comprises prominent film personalities. When asked for a list of this year's jury, he refused to divulge the names of these honourable men and women.

Meanwhile, Shakti Samanta, who headed the 16-member jury this year, was matter-of-fact, "We watched all the seven films after which there was a vote. Devdas polled the highest number of five votes and hence got selected."

It is interesting to note that not a single film sent to the Oscars in the last 15 years has won a Best Feature Film or Best Director Award at the National Award level. Most of them have not even bagged Best Film Awards in the popular awards given away in various regional languages.

Yet they were chosen as India's official entry to the Oscar Awards.

Sample this: in 1991, Satyajit Ray's Agantuk was chosen as Best Film at the National Awards, while Yash Chopra's Lamhe bagged the Best Feature Film Award at the Filmfare Awards. That year, the official entry to the Oscars was Randhir Kapoor's Henna.

In 1994, Rituparno Ghosh's Unnishe April won the Best Film Award at the National Awards, while Sooraj Barjatya's Hum Aapke Hain Koun...! was given the Best Feature Film award by Filmfare.

The official Indian entry to the Oscars was Ismail Merchant's Muhafiz.

In 1999, Shaji N Karun's Vaanaprastham was the Best Feature Film at the National Awards, while Sanjay Leela Bhansali's Hum Dil De Chuke Sanam was adjudged Best Film at the Filmfare Awards. But it was Deepa Mehta's 1947 -- Earth that went to the Oscars.

Last year's entry Lagaan was the first film in the last 15 years that actually swept the popular awards and won several trophies at the National Awards as well. That was an exception, not the rule.

Before long, Bhansali and co will park themselves in Los Angeles to try their hand at Hollywood-style lobbying to promote Devdas. In a recent interview, the director of Devdas said that his film is 'truly representative of Indian cinema'.

Whether it is the best representative of the Indian cinema of 2002, is a question that no one seems to want to ask or answer.

What a joke! Devdas? The Dilip Kumar version was miles better! I don't know why people over-hype the new Devdas, all it all just gloss & glamour.

Anyway, out of the list they considered, Legend of Bhagat Singh was the best and in my opinion far better than Devdas. Overall, this wasn't a good year for Indian films. I guess Devdas is gonna get all the major awards at the numerous forthcoming Indian award ceremonies, which are all just a farce!

How was Kanathil Muthamittal placed with the other list of films as it was released the same year as Laggan? Wouldn't that have been dissmissed by the Oscar's????

I personally would have loved to have seen Mani Ratnam's film be nominated, it really is an Indian film to be proud off.

I personally didn't like the film Road and found it a 2 hour bore of MTV stylized images and a lack of a decent screenplay. Also Manoj Bajpai is fast becoming type casted in similar (preditable) roles, even though he tries hard to put something new into them. Please directors use him to his fullest extent, he is a great actor on the scale of what Bachchan was in his prime...

Maybe Ratnam should collaborate with him for his next film :)
