I have been considering buying the dvd. Is the movie any good and furthermore is the disc worth buying?

Excellent film.

I have a friend who has seen most of the big-name Hindi films and thinks that Dil Se is the best one.

It has an interesting and dramatic story line, good acting, and one of the best soundtracks ever for a film (Andrew Lloyd Webber came across a showing of Dil Se on his cable system, and immediately decided to get the composer, A.R. Rahman, to collaborate with him on a production). The photography is exceptionally well done. All of the song-and-dance segments are done as fantasies of the characters, due to the serious nature of the plot.

The DVD of it that I own has good (but not great) non-anamorphic picture quality and very good 5.1 sound. The DVD should not interfere with your enjoyment of the film, but like most Hindi DVDs, could have been done better.

Saw this today and was quite impressed by the dvd. While it was unclean with lots of scratches and dust specks, the general picture was very sharp and vibrant but it was the sound that blew me away. One of the best 5.1's on a hindi dvd. The sound was so great that I could feel the movie.

The film itself was actually rather dissapointing and left me a little bewildered. The first half I have to say was fantastic and I thought it was building up to great finish. 8/10 for the movie before the interval, it was brilliant up till then. After the interval, I rate the movie as 5/10. What the hell was this movie about? What message was it trying to convey, cos it didnt get thru clearly. Cinematography by Santosh Sivan was fantastic and is evident throughout the movie. Shah-Rukh delivers a fine performance

The ending was very dissapointing and wasnt really neccessary. I dont really wanna spoil it for anyone who hasnt seen it so I wont say what happens. But its worth seeing the movie just for the first half. Dvd is going cheap (only cost me about £5 so I didnt really waste my money).

The dvd did show however that eros can author dvds but they are just lazy sh*theads :ffs:

You'll find that Eros didn’t actually author this DVD - most of there DVDs are not authored by themselves but out sourced to third parties. Dil Se was done by DEI originally (twice).

Thats cool, I just saw no mention of dei on the cover or on the disc so assumed it was by eros. Already missing Dei so much!!
We'll just have to see whether eros have done a decent job on devdas or not.
Oops ive just seen the screenshots, damn they suck. Go to hell EROS.

I agree with your assessment, except that I put less emphasis on plot/story in a film. If I want a great story, I'll buy a great novel.

While films are often used to tell a story, most of them are not really stories of any consequence. This is certainly just as true in Bollywood, where many great blockbuster films are simply "boy meets girl, girl meets a different boy, someone sacrifices their happiness for the sake of someone they love. Period."

The fact that Dil se has a somewhat more interesting story line was icing on the cake - it enhanced an otherwise impressionistic film built on the cinematography and soundtrack. So, the way they chose to conclude the story established in the first half, was not such a big deal to me - even though I understand what you are saying.

My biggest grouse with the DEI/Eros DVD of this film is the incorrect aspect ratio. For a film, wherein each frame is beautifully composed and shot, no greater disservice could have been done by DEI and/or Eros than to have cropped part of the frame. Ofcourse along with a correct aspect ratio, an anamorphic picture transferred from a better (less used/scratched) print would have helped too.
Regarding the sound, it is one of the best 5.1 surround sound you will find on Indian DVDs although the sound was a bit bright for my liking. Add to this the wonderful background score and song compositions from A.R. Rehman and you have an audio/visual treat.
As for my opinion of the film itself, it is a good effort towards a different film yet within the regular mainstrean commercial Indian cinema, but with a poor overall result due primarily to a loose script and lack of direction in the story.
In conclusion the film is technically one of the best films ever made in India but overall a subpar film specially for Mani Ratnam standards. As for the DVD, inspite of it's shortcomings, it is still a very good buy, even at full price.

PS: My views are of the DEI authored DVD of Dil Se released by Eros. The packaging itself has both the DEI and Eros logos.

In my view, the best Manirathnam films are

1) Maunaragam
2) Geetanjali
3) Anjali
4) Nayakudu (Nayagan)
5) Roja

In general, you cannot go wrong with a Maniratnam film. But I did not enjoy the following films as much as the others - Iddaru(Iruvar), Bombay, Dil Se.

In my opinion Mani Ratnam's best film is his debut film - 'Pallavi, Anu Pallavi' (in Kannada).....great story, mature handling and superb acting...watch it if you can......with sub-titles....

I have not seen all or even most of Mani Ratnam films but from the ones that I have seen the following are the ones that I thought were outstanding work.

In no particualr order:
1) Nayakan
2) Roja
3) Geetanjali
4) Bombay

PS: Roja is currently being redied for an International re-release. I believe they are digitally enhancing parts of the film and the sound is being remixed. Also the film is going to be one song less for this release. I am so looking forward to a decent DVD release of this restored version of Roja. I pray and hope some decent company will get to release the DVD for this. I guess the success of the re-release will have some bearing on this. So here's wishing it a lot of success.

Dont worry Sanjay you will have One Particularly Good company releasing this dvd. Its quality "will be much better than the shit released by EROS, Yashraj and Videosound" and it will be "an interlaced release" ... If you know what I mean :D
