YRF’s anamorphic DTPH

New release vs. old release

I received my copy of new anamorphic DTPH. I also borrowed the old version from my friend. Here is the comparison:

1) Old release had tons of fancy booklets, pictures etc. New one has nothing.
2) Old one was interlaced (not even repeated frames for pseudo prog) and non-anamorphic. New one is progressive and anamorphic.
3) PQ looks slightly better in the new one when viewed on reg TVs. Lot better on progressive sets.
4) Video bit rate is consistently 20-25 % lower in the new release than the old release and still the picture is better in the new release (old release was 4 Mbps normal to 6.5 Mbps in songs; new release has 3 Mbps normal to 5 in songs). It may be attributed to 24 vs 30 recorded frames per sec. This clearly shows the advantage of progressive recording.
Does it imply that the same old master was used for the new version??
5) Audio bit rate was 224 kbps in the old release and is 384 kbps in the new release. Both were DD-3/2.1 and nothing in the effects channel.
6) Extras on the disc and subtitles, I think, are the same in both releases. This also implies, they could have used higher bit rates (at least that 25% that became avail from prog. Recording) to fill up the disc capacity.

Overall, I’m happy with the new progressive anamorphic DTPH as it is an improvement on the old release.

Rana and Arsh,
What is your comparative rating to the disk vs KNPH?

I will rate it same as DEI's SHOLAY. Of course, I rate DEI's SHOLAY above all the interlaced prints that I have come across (very few exceptions).

Reason: Low bit rates in DTPH.

That's very sad. YRF disks are very expensive and if you take in to account the quality they should be selling them for $5 bucks.

On the side note some of the Superdigital authorized Vdeosound disks are very pleasing to watch. May be because of the colors or because of less digital artifacts.
