I was planning on taking my gora buddies to a desi film on saturday. However, there aren't really any great films running (Devdas has no shows on saturday, unfortunately). Unless Yeh Kya Ho Raha Hai or Pyaasa turn out good, which they probably won't, I'll be stuck showing them either Road or Shakti. Which would you recommend I show them at the theater?

Road has similarities with many Hollywood flicks, which may work against it gaining an American audience.

Though I haven't seen Road yet, but I would still recommend that you take your gora mates to see Shakti, it defies more Bollywood qualities. Taking your mates to see Road would be for them just another Hollywood flick, but in a different language with some musical scores.

But is shakti necessarily a good movie? I'd rather take them to a good hollywood style bollywood film than a bad bollywood style film.

Yes, SHAKTI is a good Film. Westerners will appreciate this kind of film making. Moreover, it's not a copy of any Hollywood style movie, has Indian village atmosphere, not a masala movie but intresting enough. Has good songs, good cinematography. Child custody with some one else, away from mother's homeland, is a real happenings and are in the news often.

Road could be a good film, too. I haven't seen it yet but would like to see it in theatre if I get a chance. But the plot I have already seen in Hollywood movie Breakdown.

Came back from Shakti... it was really good, but way too depressing. My buddies liked it... bad timing though, one of my friends just broke up with his girlfriend, and he was extremely depressed.
