It's a logical explaination but illogical for them to save a few hundred dollars on encoding for a movie whose DVD rights cost hunreds of thosands of dollars.
Not only that but Indian movies are made on exotic locations and with extravagant songs & dance sequences yet the impact is lost with grim and bland DVD transfers. They take so much time, effort and money to create these filmi worlds yet totally destroy the effect on DVD. The dim witted logic of Indian DVD makers doesn’t stop their – there is always an argument to made that if Indian DVDs were of decent quality and with proper subtitles they would appeal to a wider non-traditional audience. At the moment Indian DVDs are aimed for the same people who will go to cinema or rent Indian films on VHS – quality is not of paramount importance. And with poor transfers, subtitles and non-existence extras not only are Indian DVD makers losing their legitimate customer base but there is virtually no interest from others that might buy DVDs if they were decent quality. In that sense I would agree its false economy and everyone is the losing out – the consumers and DVD makers.
