It was a night the Emperor of evil who rejoiced and danced like a pygmy-sized puppet gone mad while he saw the industry being reduced to ruins hated with all his black and evil heart all that he saw. He could not bear to see the people he had so successfully and systematically snatched away from the theatres coming back, marching back in glory to the theatre. He chewed up his drink-sodden liver when he saw the serpentine queues outside every theatre where the advance bookings for Devdas opened (wasn’t the serpent supposed to be one of his poisonous but precious pets?) His eyes were blinded with rage when he saw all the “house full” boards going up in theatre after theatre both in India and wherever it was released in the world. He was shocked at the strong survival instinct of man and instantly thought of other devilish ways to make sure of his survival to defeat man’s designs to succeed with the help of God, the enemy he (the devil has been waging a loosing war against God ever since He created the world). He lost all the power he had at his dangerous elbow when he saw Sanjay Leela Bhansali and his team trounce his plans, trample all over them and tear them to tatters. The first signs of the unprecedented success of Sanjay’s Devdas made the devil see the first signs of doomsday for him. Sanjay Leela Bhansali proved that the devil could be defeated, the devil who had threatened to wipe out the industry could be put down even with a slight touch of the human hand and human talent. Sanjay showed his fellowmen the light and the way. Sanjay proved all the devil’s disciples wrong on the day the windows opened to sell tickets even at very exorbitant rates. Sanjay proved that some extraordinary feats could be performed by men too with the help of God, of course. Sanjay’s blast at the box-office shook up the empire of the evil forces working over time to spread a pall of gloom over the industry. Sanjay proved that dedication bordering on devotion, sincerity and the all-powerful will of man could over turn and crush defeat and strike terror into the plans of the Emperor of evil and his disciples. Sanjay proved that it was not bad luck that made bad films but bad intentions that did. Sanjay’s success has driven away the dark forces of despair for the moment and ushered in an era of hope. Sanjay proved that he is a symbol of infinitesimal man’s infinite power to inflict insulting defeat on the most invincible obstacles that mar life from time to time. May his tribe increase and may we have many more Sanjays who can see what is to come if what is done, is done in the right spirit.

Look, the magic :
The magic has still not failed. The magic will not fail. Time may play its games with her like time always does but the magic about Madhuri Dixit will stay on. The magic of her ethereal beauty, the magic of her sweetness, the magic of the light her presence spreads, the magic of her full-throated laughter which comes gushing from the heart, the magic of not letting her basic humility, her genuine goodness, her open-hearted talk, her reluctance to fall below the rich and right standards she had set for herself... How can all this treasure just fade away just because she is a married woman now?

Madhuri was away in America, far away from all the maddening hustle-bustle of films which took away some of the best time of her life, with her husband Dr Shreeram Nene (Ram for her). She was in Mumbai for a few days and the way she was received, the applause she was greeted with and the questions she raised, first at the unique exhibition of a fresh series of MF Husain’s paintings of her as the “eternal enchantress”, Chandramukhi, then at the premiere of Devdas and the very next day at the function organised by Sony to launch her first ever serial was enough to show the world the dazzle of the sheer magic that comes only from some one who has that something special within which can not be described easily. She raised many questions and the most prominent was the one which has been asked on countless occasions during the last decade and a half —- Will we have another Ms Madhuri Dixit again? And every one still gropes for answers.
