I wonder if some one can shed some light on the following two questions as well??

1) Metrdome ASOKA DVD plays on PC-DVD. There is no NTSC/ PAL issue here. If the DVD player has read the film frame info, can it output the info in NTSC or PAL (without PAL to NTSC conversion) at our preferrence?? If not, why not and what part of the DVD code makes it a PAL or NTSC DVD??

2) As mentioned earlier in this thread, signal is being read and is being transferred from PAL to NTSC. If this is true, is the First Line release as good or as bad as the picture that we are wathing on NTSC TVs?? The picture from playing the DVD on APEX 1500 (NTSC output) and monitored on NTSC TV looks fantastic.

Thanks.

Rana Ji! mypleasure!

1. DVD rom Pc drives are PAL/NTSC compatable and Region free...while all R1 dvd players are not..Technicality, fram conversion etc? I am naive on dat!!

2. First look r1 dvd even on apex player or pc, or any dvd rom based player is extremely, bad, galore of artifacts!!as the dvd was prepared with pal-ntsc conversion as vhs are made!

On apex player and NTSC tv, or using dvd rom to nTSC TV! It looks Scintilating/Superb?fantasyic, even ur apex 1500 is notprog scan and has only s-video connection, if u have dvd rom outboard with component video/rgb, or SVGA connection, It is going to Knock ur socks off, in Prog scan 3;2 pull down and Component or SVGA, entirely digital connection with no data lost!

BTW! sound on both versions R1/R2 is mindblowing anyways!

R2 metrodome is the REAL THING as far ASKA dvd is concerned.
R1 Asoka is a GIMMICK and I will humbly suggest to only do PISS on that copy if u can? :baaa: :vangry:  :bangbang: :ffs:

I thought, I put in a word of caution here.

Not every thing is honky-dory with Metrodome ASOKA played in R1.

1) It plays fine on my PC DVD. It does recognize anamorphic picture and displays it properly. The picture quality is fantastic.

2) But,
When playing on APEX-1500 DVD player, the picture doesn’t change its AR irrespective of the TV AR settings in DVD menu. The picture is always somewhat stretched vertically. My guess will be aprox 10-15% (doesn’t look too bad, though).
When playing the extras feature, the picture, mostly, is vertically squashed.

For the same scene, Sun/ Moon (supposed to be round) is vertically stretched in the main feature and vertically squashed in the extras feature.

This flaw seems to be due to APEX’s failure to read and display the DVD info properly. I also wonder if difference in # of scan lines between PAL/ NTSC has anything to do with this?

ok, rana ji, i got what u said! just to clarify, i think u meant r2 dvd on apex player and ntsc tv? it was a bit confusing for me ???

so, if so, u have problem with aspect ratio?

firstly, lets back track..i assume u have a ntsc tv, widescreen with aspect ratio control, or muliple widescreen modes or zoom functions?

secondlly..ur apex 1500, is interlace only player? and have only s video connection.no component video?

now, i watched film, on my x box dvd drive, in interlace mode!
on 64 inch widescreen tv(not in prog mode) my connection was component video, and picyutre quality of asoka r2 was amazing imo..period.
i did not feel like need of prog scan either, as i was seeing a superior picture already, as compare to pissworthy r1 transfer of asoka viewed in prog scan, ..

vertically stretched or squished, and unable to control, aspect ratio, i can check for u, if u wish..pls. let me know abt ur set up please.

:baaa: :vsneaky:  ???

Thanks Arsh.

As I said, there was no problem, whatsoever, watching Metrodome ASOKA on my PC-DVD and PC monitor. The picture was fantastic, perhaps the best I have ever seen.

Now, for my DVD player TV combo (both interlaced):
My TV doesn’t have AR control (Panasonic 4:3, 32 inch).
Sony DVD player refuses to play DVD (area limitations mentioned).
Apex-1500 plays it but picture AR doesn’t change when you set the TV mode (in DVD player) to “WIDE”, “Pan & Scan” or “Letterbox”. The picture is slightly stretched vertically in the main feature, almost un-noticeable (less than VS Bade Miyan Chhote Miyan). Compare the full Moon/ Sun shots, after the Kalinga war. In the main feature, the Sun/ moon is stretched vertically and in the extras, it is squashed. Somebody told me that this flaw is due to APEX not reading the disc properly. Obviously, the DVD is fine, as it does play OK on PC-DVD. Perhaps some other multi-region (other than APEX-1500) DVD player can read this DVD properly, assuming that this flaw is not due to difference in # of lines between NTSC and PAL.

Ok got u! Now, as dvd seems to play fine, absolutely gorgeous with perfect Ar etc on my system..i know nath is NOT going to like it as he is an absolute lover of apex machines..that i find not satisfying for my primary viewing, but for its flexibility? and low price ek aadh side par padi bhi rahe tou kher hai! I dont watch very many out of region dvds any way, asoka r2 is an exception..that i am absolutely glad that i went for!
next thing i did was, pissed on r1 asoka and sent it to hell!
Well, i am glad that u liked it too, and felt the same way! btw! did u ever see r1 asoka? if not! u must, just to appreciate your purchase pf r2 disc..cheers. :baaa:  :vsneaky: :xmas:

Arsh,
Yesterday I placed an order for this dvd and I got a mail today with the text.
I bet they really care about customers just like you said.

Quote:
Thank you for your recent order.

I'd just like to double-check that you are aware that the DVDs we sell are Region 2 format, whereas North America uses Region 1. What this means is that to watch the DVDs we sell, you'll need a dual format DVD player.

I would be grateful if you would confirm this one way or the other, as we don't want to send you something that you can't use!

Best Regards,

Ruth

Thanks Rana, Arsh and Sknath,
I got the dvd today. I will watch it tonight and let you know. Looks like a winner. Browsed though my work computer. For $13 shipped is a bargain for the dvd.
