Folks,

I have decided to post this information in order to provide some info to all DVD fans who wish to purchase thse Shemaroo DVDs. As we all know Shemaroo is licensed to sell their DVDs only in India and not abroad. However we still can purchase these DVDs here in North America... Now in this regard there are certain terms which I wish to coin here (credit goes to my friend here in Ottawa who helped me with it also )

GSP :- Genuine Shemaroo Pirate
PSP :- Pirate Shemaroo Pirate

Now the former are exact replicas of Original Shemaroo DVDs released in India. When you purchase any Shemaroo DVD at any shop ( except Indiaweekly unless u happen to be in Cheshire or IBB if you happen to be in NJ), make sure you notice 2 things so that you end up with a GSP and not a PSP

1.) The List of Films released on DVD are also there on the Shemaroo website
http://www.shemaroo.com/online/tophits.asp?sent=DVDS

2.) The cover of Shemaroo DVDs will be faded (with/without an Inlay card). However take a look at the back part of the cover. Compare it with a Shemaroo RK films cover and if the DVD you selected and the Shemaroo RK Film DVD cover (back part) doesnt match then you can be sure that you are invariably getting a PIRATE !!!!

Some pirates :- Coolie, Khatta Meeta, Phool Aur Patthar (Dharmendra version)...

3.) Lastly make sure you ask the DVD wallah to play the DVd for you. If the opening SHEMAROO credits do not appear then you can be rest assured that it is a PIRATE aka PSP.

I've got one of them. Songs are taken from YRF, Eros and DEI DVDs - only reprocessed and look worse than their full DVDs.

WHO PROMOTES SUPPORTS ENCORAGES DVD PIRACY WHEN:

-Genuine product is poor quality and the smuggled or replicated from some other source is a lot better?

-A distributor for a big name brand carries only genuine and legal DVDs no matter how bad the agreed release quality of DVD is?

-A big name brand name distributor has all the real (and high quality) legal DVDs released by his parent company. But he also has other brands where only 10% of his stock is genuine legal and the remainder is replicated/ pirate, which may be better or worst than original. He also has illegal DVDs perhaps made by the parent company for which he is the distributor.

-There is no clear-cut distinction between what is legal or illegal or no clear-cut right holder or no enforcement.

- One DVD maker has rights for a DVD in one part of the world. He won’t ship outside his territory but encourages you to ask someone to buy on your behalf and then ship it to you. A single DVD makes its way into another territory and someone replicates it and markets it. As Ali said, in case of Shemaroo, the original DVD maker has no recourse to stop it. Now whom do you blame if the replicated DVD is decidedly a lot better than the legal (in that territory) DVD and is available at a fraction of the cost?

When you buy a pirate DVD, you never know what you are getting, it may be as good as Original, it can be better than original or it can be as bad as 10th generation VHS copy.

I think the only way to stop illegal DVDs is to release a DVD in consistently good quality and somehow copy protect it. Consistent good quality is the only ammunition against piracy, as pirates can’t provide consistent good quality. It definitely encourages consumers to buy pirate if the legal brand is consistently poor and the pirate product is better (sometimes it is a lot better e.g. GSP vs. Yashraj and at times a lot worst).

Rana

BTW. Another way to control piracy is Protection money but that is illegal too. Even if it does work, does it work for the rightful owner or for the pirate?
