...set of pics from Ayngaran's Thithikkuthe DVD. Personally I think that this movie is even better than Pithamagan interms of entertainment and repeat value. Also the fact that it has Sridevi (who's one of the best newcomers EVER) doesn't hurt aswell (u can see it in the pics
i took of her). Anyway the dvd is I think one of the few new Ayngaran releases which is not progressive, but is still 16x9 2.35:1 with DTS and DD soundtracks. Although the video is interlaced, u can still see that its miles ahead of the usual Eros releases.

Hey, it's windowboxed. That's a nice touch for people with TVs that overscan. But it looks quite pixellated!

Dragun, yeah the movie is quite grainy at some parts, and is somewhat pixellated during certain scenes. However overall the video is way better than Ayngaran's earlier releases like "Alaipayuthe" and is possibly comparable with middle releases like "Anbe Sivam" or "Nala Dayamanthi". However the best Ayngaran DVD I've seen so far is "Jay Jay" - I have not seen "Kaaka Kaaka" yet.

Anyway so have any of tamil movie fans seen this one yet? I discovered this film quite by accident (saw Sridevi's face on the cover) and I loved it. It's nothing new I admit, but it was just very well told with some good comedy scenes and some really awesome songs.

Are there any similarly themed Tamil movies released in the past year or so? I have seen Lesa Lesa, Priyamana Thozhi, Kadhal Virus, and all of Madhavan's films.

Yeah Kuttapan, this movie is awesome... atleast for me! The story is really basic but very entertaining. The girl and guy know each other as kids but then the girl moves and the guy also moves. Both love each other though so they decide to not like anyone else and marry each other when they grow up. Anyways, so they grow up and the girl and guy move to the same city not knowing each other. The girl then figures out who the guy is, but decides to make him fall in love with her before revealing who she is. She does just that and then a little complication later they both get married, the end. LOL

Don't worry though, this movie is really good if you like the main actress Sridevi, since its her movie from basically the first hour onwards. The chemistry between her and the lead actor is pretty good, and the songs are really melodious to listen to. The cinematography is also pretty breathtaking with the majority of the movie taking place in Urban chennai. Hmm... what else, not much of action, there is some sidekick comedy but comedian Vivek is pretty funny, the other actress is kinda hot and she only has 2 songs (if u hate her), and the whole movie revolves basically around the girl winning the guy's heart.

So if u like typical but entertaining romance movie or u like the actress, watch this movie - if u want art, go watch Pithamagan or a Mani Ratnam film.

kutappan, whats the link for balaji's site?? I'm just starting to discover these tamil movies so I'd like to read as many reviews as possible. The only decent site i've discovered for movie reviews is the Chennai online site. Do u know of any websites for movie and dvd reviews for these films? Any english-language forums/messageboards where they discuss these movies would also be very helpful.

Tamil movies reviews available at : http://www.geocities.com/bbreviews

This site is generally pretty accurate with reviews - I generally use this before renting/buying Tamil movies.

OMG so sorry about that LOL, but can someone delete this post and the link I accidentally posted in my last mssg.

You pervs should know what that link is for.. so if u want that video u might as well download it, but it has nothing to do with Thittikutte or any Tamil movie, so it doesn't belong here... LOL

:D :D

watched this dvd last night and was very disappointed. detail was non-existent and it looks as if they transfered PAL to NTSC. there was lots of shimmering, bringing to mind such DVDs as Asoka R1 and the Canadian version of "The Pianist". watch the song/chapter beginning with a shot of the lead actor on some train tracks to see what i mean.

although my memory of the "alaipayuthe" dvd is fading, i find it hard to believe that this dvd tops it. the colour and sound were excellent however, and i didn't notice much graininess.

the subtitles were terrible. i remember one scene going about 75% unsubtitled.

theon if u look at the video stills above, that is almost exactly like how the video looks on my TVs. The colour is nice, but there is alot of blocks/compression artifacts - althought not nearly as some of the Eros releases. The detail is *somewhat* ok, but nearly not good enough. In comparison to Ayngaran's recent release JAY JAY, this video is utterly crap!!

Alaipayuthe's video was good but it was excessively grainy and had really washed out colours. I mean if you look the "Pancham Nigame" song and then compare it to the same song "Saathiya" from the YRF Saathiya dvd - the colours will really pop out on the Hindi version. Sad to say when a YRF dvd looks better than an Ayngaran one, but in this case it does. Keep in mind that both songs were shot in the same manner with similar colours and stuff... so a comparison is justifiable.

However Theon, what did u think of the movie Thithikkuthe itself?

Saathiya and Alai Payuthey had two different cinematographers. P C sriram used a lot of filters to match the wardrobes in AlaiPayuthey. While in the Hindi version, the cinematographer rarely used any filters at all. I agree Saathiya dvd had much more vibrant colors than Alai Payuthey dvd. Ayngaran transfers goes for everything bright and clean look, sacrificing the color vibrancy. The new dvds like Pithamagan and Jay Jay have good color saturation.

darius, the stills themselves lack much detail, and you can't tell how movement looks from stills. my main beef with the dvd was the distracting shimmering (do you know what i mean? wish i could be more technical...) that occured with movement. i'm pretty sure this was converted from a PAL source since i haven't seen such poor PQ from ayngaran.

as for the saathiya DVD, it was oversaturated IMO. the beginning of the title song has vivek with a glowing red shirt. i'm not a fan of colours that "pop out"; i'd rather have them look natural and there is nothing as red as vivek's shirt in real life.

as for the movie, i didn't think it was anything special. i think the "comedy" detracted from the film, and the action was worse than that of DDLJ. i have a thing against corny song lyrics and the comparisons between iraq and a woman's heart are in my hall of fame. the dubbing was also poorly done. and what was with the special handshake?

aside from those criticisms, i did enjoy the movie overall. perhaps because the lead male rekindled my dream of becoming a star (if HE can make it...) and the plot solidified my aspirations of becoming a screenplay writer (i'm joking...well, at least half-joking).

i'm sure there were positive points that i can't remember right now. darius, what were the aspects of the movie that made this film stand out (aside from your infatuation with the actress :P )
