Hi all,

I was just browsing at Indiaweekly and took a look at Baba's catalogue. To my great surprise, I found that Baba have released truly some of the greatest Indian movies. I'd say their catalogue is more impressive than even Yash Raj!

What I would like to know is how come Baba, who clearly select only the very best titles to release, but end up giving us consumers some of the worst quality dvds on the market? It just doesn't make sense.

Welcome to the club TEE :D

I guess some ppl here (you know who you are) find the quality of BABA dvd's great :D

Baba is simply a pirate company... unfortunately, they havent yet enfringed on the rights of DVDs of some big companies, else they would have been shut down like EROS shut down DEI !

I watched this movie 'Bazaar' released by baba. It was worst than a used VHS. Avoid it at any cost.

Monizam... BABA and possibility of finding good dvds is like
trying to find a non-vegetarian in a vegetarian's home (a PG-13 analogy... dont wanna use an R-rated analogy here :D)

Tee as I stated before.. avoid their dvds like plague... take them only for free or if u are desperate for that film ( like I am..for Chalti Ka Naam Gaadi..) copy that film on DVD... cos afterall
"Choron ke ghar mein chori nahi
HERA PHERI kehlati hai" :D

Sknath, I'm tempted to rent CKNG, but then I see the Baba logo and am disappointed. I may rent it one of these days, but I don't want it in my house forever :baaa:

Jhanak Jhanak Payal Baaje is a little better than, say, Ram Aur Shyam, but it is still mahacrap, which says something about their other titles.

I just happened to own quite a few of their dvds, and bought them a few years back at a whopping $14.99 each from their websites. Looking back now i could kick myself, what a waste on money, from the lot not one shows better than the esquire vhs there ought to be a law against chors like these :bash: :bash:

If anything this is one that you will be surprised with, the transfer is decent as per BaBa standard, there are artifacts but nothing to worry about, except that annoying logo on the lower right of you screen. Since it's a B/W don't expect too much, it does have it's fair share of darkness and lacks adequate sharpness. However, you should get relief from the antics of the Kumars and become oblivious to the quality of the DVD. In the end you may want to keep this one in your house! :D

yaaron.

i always had this shanka, isn't baba pirate. i mean, do they have rights for any of the dvds they release?

check out the recent releases. like madhumati, sujata, devdas.. i mean, isn't the right holder yashrajfilms. i mean how do they get away like that, they have dvds from eros, video sound, dei, evp which are re-altered and packaged as baba dvds.

how do they do it :oo: :keh: :hmm:

I borrowed it and watched some of it last night. I've seen worse from YRF and Baba but it is still quite poor. I hope BEI will do this one and Jhumroo someday.

"a lot of Hollywood DVD authors out there who or on par or worst than Indian DVD makers and do employ the same unscrupulous methods as their Indian counterparts you should see the scramble to get their hands on those prints that are in public domains with expired copyrights"

I wonder, what we call a Pirate and/ or a Genuine DVD, is really a "PUBLIC DOMAIN" DVD??

You can't expect any cooperation from the producers of a film if the movie you picked up for transferring on to DVD is in Public Domain.

To pick up a film from the right holders is not cheap. The total cost of getting a brand new revived film print or its negative, editing, commentary, proper DVD authoring etc is nothing in comparison to what rights to a film cost or should cost.

I wonder, how many or what percentage of Indian DVDs are of films in Public Domain. Don’t expect a good print from a DVD made from a public domain film.

I also wonder, why someone would cut corners in DVD authoring costs when film rights cost so much. Do they really acquire proper rights for making DVDs??

What are the Indian copyright laws? How long does a motion picture copyright last?

Quite a few Baba DVDs are films from the 70s. Could these have fallen into public domain? Even if they fell into public domain, where did they get the Beta copy or whatever they used to make the DVD? From the companies that made the VHS years ago?

I wonder if Pyramid is also doing DVDs of mostly public domain films. Their DVD catalog has many older titles.

A lot of films might be in public domain, but some DVDs do come from legal right holders or with their blessings. For example, if a Film's producer or director or any other associate is featured or interviewed and included in the extras of a certain batch of DVDs, then that batch of DVDs for sure is made with his/ her blessings. This is another thing whether he himself/ herself has the rights to that film. The rights may have been permanently passed on to some one else (example; Teesri Kasam).

Logically, it stands to reason that the best print must reside with the right holder, as he is the one who has to protect his investment. So, to make a proper DVD, right holder’s consent is essential. This does comes at a cost. For a freebie, you can’t expect quality.

One thing I still don’t understand is why will anyone cut corners in the process of making a DVD if he has paid many many times more for the proper rights??

Rana

BTW, at one time I took an original ESQUIRE VHS tape of a famous film to the film’s producer for his autographs. He signed it, but the next day he told me, he never had given or passed on the film rights or video rights to any one. That original ESQUIRE VHS from the mid 80s was really a pirate.
