- Comparatively it’s one of the best Indian films transfers
on DVD, but still has not been treated with the same respect that flop
Hollywood R1 DVDs get from Colombia.

Other DVD reviews:
One of the best Bollywood films of 2000, Mission Kashmir
(2000) is finally available on DVD after a lot of back and forth as to
who did have the rights and would do it. All good things to those who
can wait. Is this DVD from Columbia-Tristar, their second 'Indian' DVD
after Lagaan:
Once Upon a Time in India (2001) a good thing?
The film master used is in good shape. There are minor instances of speckles,
dirt and fine scratches, also some density fluctuations a couple of times,
but overall it's quite clean and image steadiness is good. Colour and
contrast rendition are good. The film master is faithfully reproduced.
Colours are sometimes vivid and sometimes muted.
Image sharpness is uneven, going from sharp to fuzzy. Overall it's below
average for a CT DVD but very good compared to most Indian DVDs and about
the same as DVDs from Indian quality label DEI.
The noise and grain level is low, but some scenes have a veil of fine
noise over them that's typical of digital noise reduction. Video artefacts
are minor. Some edge enhancement, a bit noise reduction flicker, smearing
and noise at times (most visible in the end credits). The look is pretty
film-like and pleasing on any kind of display. Compression is good.
The DD 5.1 sound is of good quality as well with some deep bass effects.
The recording level is way too low, though. There is also a second 5.1
track in English with all dialogue dubbed but the songs left alone. This
English version is atrocious. If you think it's a good idea to listen
to Brad Pitt or Julia Roberts speaking Chinese or Japanese you might like
this English version as well. But for everybody else it's obvious that
you can not use American voices from a completely different cultural context
and marry them to Indian characters without generating a jarring culture
clash. It would work if the original cast had dubbed themselves into English,
using the Hinglish we associate with Indians. But what we have here is
awful. Especially Hrithik Roshan's English voice is ridiculous, a macho
Marlboro man that's so wrong that I had to stop listening to this parody
after a few minutes. Avoid this English version at all costs.
Yes, this DVD is a good thing. Very few Indian films are available on
DVD in this quality. Compared to the best DEI DVDs it's a bit softer but
has less video artefacts as well, therefore looking more film-like. There
are no supplements except for 4 trailers. That's ok considering that the
film is long and needs all bits for itself. Not okay is the lack of a
separate song menu. One would have thought that CT got enough feedback
for "Lagaan" from people complaining about the missing song
menu. Apparently not as they did it again. Dear CT: Indian DVDs need a
separate song menu since the songs are often watched many more times than
the whole film by people which watch and buy Bollywood films on DVD. Ok??!
Got it??
