Other DVD reviews:
The film master used is in good shape. It's rather clean, free of dirt,
scratches and similar problems. And image steadiness is good. Colour and
contrast rendition are ok as well. Colors are well saturated and dark
scenes have deep blacks and fair shadow detail. Unfortunately that's where
the good news end.
Images are not sharp but pretty fuzzy. The DVD is 16:9 enhanced but it's
a joke since a nice not 16:9 enhanced DVD looks a lot sharper. It serves
no purpose to 16:9 enhance a DVD if it does not provide additional 33%
vertical resolution. Images are not sharp for various reasons. Most of
the time digital noise reduction reduces sharpness. The MPEG encoder is
too bad to handle sharp images at the fixed bit rate of ~5 Mbit/s which
is used.
And the transfer is not progressive anyway but mixes half frames to full
frames that do not show original film frames but a combination of two
frames. That adds motion artefacts galore and smears picture detail. The
DVD is riddled with video artefacts. Finer detail is always unstable and
wobbles and flickers. Aliasing is visible and also some edge enhancement.
The compression breaks down during fast motion and blocking is visible.
Some night scenes look quite nice, but the rest is disappointing.
By far the best thing about the DVD is the 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack
which is good quality and offers genuine 5 channel sound, not fake surround
generated from a stereo master. Finally the image is cropped from an original
aspect ratio of 2.35 to 2.15 which means that there is some image missing
on both sides. Usually it does not matter much but in some shots you can
see that some image is missing.
Most of the time the DVD is not a nice view. It's ok for small TVs when
sitting far away. On larger screens the flaws are obvious. I can't recommend
this DVD.
