Synopsis
From, Saurabh Shukla, the co-writer of the brilliant Satya
(2000 - Chakravarthy, Urmila Matondkar and Manoj Bajpai) comes another
masterpiece in Indian cinema and zulm.net's film of 2000, Dil Pe
Mat Le Yaar. The movie features Manoj Bajpai as the protagonist
in a masterful performance only he could have pulled off. The film is
griping from the start delivery torches of humour, high drama and thought-provoking
cinema while providing pure entertainment all the way through. But its
not a film everyone will enjoy - the Indian box office response was moderate
to say the least and general census from Indian was negative towards the
film. Dil Pe Mat Le Yaar is nevertheless an intelligent
film that is a 'must see' - excellently scripted, top performances
from Manoj Bajpai, Tabu and supporting cast (Saurabh Shukla and Aditya
Shrivatsava) and is a shockingly good entertainer.
Eros International has released the DVD under their usual Eros/B4u tag.
Video
The cover states the film is presented in 2.35:1 aspect ratio while in
fact the correct presented screen aspect ratio is 2.25:1 from the movies
original cinema wider A/R of 2.40:1. The video is presented enhanced for 16x9
wide screen TVs but the detail that you would expect from this format
and production does not materialise. For a new movie there is noticeable
amount wear and tear signs that spoil the transfer. Dust and white spot
marks are presented throughout the entire DVD. A film of this cablire,
which has very dark and moody scenes, required a transfer with extra care
and effort put into this DVD to make it shine, unfortunately the DVD Eros
has put out seems have all the hall marks of a 'rush job' tattooed all
over it. Dark scenes are really hard to make out losing all fine shadow
detail in the process. Colours also seem faded and never really depict
the accurate look of the movie. Another poor, rushed effort from Eros.
Video rating: 5/10
Audio
The background score and song music is a vital part of Dil Pe Mat
Le Yaar and was originally presented in Dolby Digital 6.1 EX surround
sound. While rest of the DVD industry is delivery earth shattering DVD
audio in form of DD 6.1 EX, Eros seems to be taking a step backwards.
The audio on the DVD is presented in DD 4 channel, which is really strange,
as many other Eros DVD titles have been presented in at least DD5.1. The
sound separation is non-existence but is reasonably clear. There are signs
of background noise and mild distortion but not overly distracting. The
audio is very disappointing and leaves you with the feeling of 'could
have been better'. Audio rating: 4/10
Extras
None.
Summary
Our favourite film of 2000 gets the one of the most mediocre DVD releases
from Eros. In the current climate of Indian DVD titles we are unlikely
to see a better print any time soon for this movie, which is a real shame
as - if there ever was a movie that deserved a top notch DVD it was Dil
Pe Mat Le Yaar. Definitely take this film to your heart, but not
the DVD!
