So far I have received 4 Official Shemaroo DVDs.

Two of them have 'Rs 550" sticker. These DVDs are Pseudo-progressive (i.e. proper NTSC Cine-tel where every 5th field is a repeated field)

The other two don't have Indian price (Rs 550) sticker. These DVDs are field averaged where each video frame contains info from more than one film frame.

If there is a co-relation, one thing comes to mind. Perhaps Indian manufactured DVDs have proper NTSC Cine-tel transfer and if DVDs are replicated in North America, something funny alters the encoding for the worst?

Rana

BTW,
1) Pseudo-prog are Saudagar and Tere Mere Sapne.
Field Averaged ones are Bullet and Chor Chor.

2) Also, my old un-official Shemaroo discs of Bobby, SSS and Mughl-e-Azam are Pseudo-prog as well.

3) SAUDAGAR DVD (packaged Jan 2003) CONTAINED A BOOKLET LISTING 87 SHEMAROO DVDS AT Rs 550 EACH.

That's good Hardev.

I have been wondering for long if the Shemaroo DVDs that we get here in North America are the same as avail in India?? I'm sure some of the Shemaroo DVDs that you are getting, I have purchased them here. It will be nice to figure out if Shemaroo DVDs start off OK in India and some/ many of them become different when produced in North America.

Well, Guys me and rana are trying to mutually nail down, this fiasco, of shemaroo, original ,pirated ,replicas and BOMBAY MUSIC!!

rana will update the findings very soon!!

Here is my take for the time being!!

ALL SHEMAROO titles I have purchased from iw, are GENUINE SHEMAROO, including PAKEEZAH that has BOMBAY HOUSE STICKER!

BOBBY /and MEA I have are supposedly, original SHEMAROO transfer but REPLICATES(same PQ)!!along with AWAARA and SANGAM!

But out of these, only BOBBY originated from IW, long time ago!!

I am not sure about their CURRENT stock of BOBBY!

So, saying all SHEMAROO here are PIRATES, that is not TRUE!

Simillarly, all GHAII titles, Sadma, KHKN, TMS dont have BOMBAY HOUSE sticker!!

MOMBAY MUSIC are AFFILIATED with OVERSEAS distribution of 16 shemaroo titles, TMS is one of them, and a couple of them r not at SHEMAROO web site!!

Wait for rana's update on quality issue! of these titles, meaning/interlaced, pseudo prog, good pq or not!! :baaa:

here: sticker reads:
Marketed in

USA&CANAD By
BOMBAY MUSIC
35-62 73RD Street
Jackson Heights
New York Ny 11372
Tel; 718-4245700..????Any difference? :baaa:

One clarification first Arsh,

My Shemaroo DVDs with 'Bombay ---' sticker is not 'Bombay House'. It says:

Markted in
USA & CANADA By
BOMBAY MUSIC
35-62, 73rd Street
Jackson Heights
New York NY 11372
Tel: 718 4245700

This sticker is pasted directly on top of the small boxed are meant for Indian Price markings.

Thanks.

Rana

(3 more DVDs added Mar 27, 2003)

So far, marking “Enhanced for smooth viewing” does not relate to Pseudo-prog or Field Averaged encoding.
There may be some clues from Bombay Music Sticker, Date packaged, where bought, etc.

Here is the grouping of 20 or so Shemaroo DVDs that I have:

1)
Satyam Shivam, Sundaram
Mughl-e-Azam
Bobby
Sangam

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
SSS, MEA, Bobby are Pseudo-prog.
Sangam is field averaged.

2)
Shri 420
Prem Rog
Awara

Bought locally from retailer. Cheap. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
No inserts.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 6/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
All are field averaged.

3)
Paakeezah

Bought locally from retailer. Reg price. Bought late 2001- early 2002.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Rs 750
Pkd 5/2001
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = No

PQ:
Field averaged. (Arsh says his copy is Pseudo-Prog)
(Arsh's copy of Paakeezah seems to be different than mine. His copy has a sticker, mine does not. His copy is Pseudo-prog, mine is field averaged)

Update: Arsh's copy is a newer version with new encoding. Prefer Arsh's version. See next page for more info.

4)
Bullet
Chor Chor

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought late 2002- early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Both field averaged.

5)
Kaajal
Afsana Pyar Ka

Bought Locally. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: NO.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Covered with BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker.
(Kaajal cover is not sharp??)
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Afsana Pyar Ka is Pseudo-Prog but very bad PQ.
Kaajal is Field Averaged.

6)
Saudagar
Tere Mere Sapne
Hero
Karma
Karz
Sadma
Ram Teri Ganga Maili

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 1/2003 (Sadma Pkd 9/2002).
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes
All in this group without doubt, Indian Shemaroo.

PQ:
All Pseudo-Prog.

7)
Chhupa Rustam

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Pseudo-Prog.

8)
Jab Jab Phool Khile

Bought from IW. Reg Price. Bought early 2003.
Inserts: YES.

Markings/ Price Sticker/ Pkd date:
Only TMS Covered with Shemaroo price sticker (instead of BOMBAY MUSIC Sticker). Pkd 10/2002.
SHEMAROO engraved on the disc inner ring = Yes

PQ:
Field Averaged

9)
(Arsh has Kabhi Haan Kabhi Na. Arsh will give further details. Arsh found it Field Averaged. )

KHKN, was FIELD AVERAGED, PQ not as good as SAUDAGAR/TMS etc!

It was purchased locally, with insert booklet, genuine shemaroo, NO BOMBAY MUSIC STICKER!

BTW! both PAKEEZAH/CHUPA RUSTAM that have BOMBAY MUSIC STICKER, show shemaroo on disc ring, come with chapter insert, on back of which u can see 16 Bombay Music Shemaroo titles! and seem to be genuine shemaroo discs, distributed through bombay music...and have good pq, both dont have gold borders either!

So far, only Arsh's Paakeezah is obviously different than mine.

Arsh had posted 2 links recently which showed Pakeezah covers. One cover is from Shemaroo site and the other was perhaps from Neha. My Pakeezah doesn't have the cover as shown on Shemaroo site currently. As my Pakeezah is field averaged and Arsh's is Pseudo-prog, perhaps Arsh has the disc shown at Shemaroo site currently.

May be, Shemaroo has re-authored Pakeezah??

Arsh, Rana, what is the serial number for both of your Pakeezah discs listed on the inner rim? I will check my copy to see if it is pseudo-prog or field averaged and post the result.

When Shemaroo authors DVDs like Karma, Hero etc, they are considered acceptable... but when they author dvds for EROS, they are deemed bad... anyone care to explain this anomaly ?

On rana's advice! I did rip off BOMBAY MUSIC sticker to see the date it says 6/2002 on my dvd!

I'll check the serial number on inner ring also, and will update my post!

My pakeezah DVD has Shinny sticker, on front, no gold borders, shemaroo on the ring, chapter inserts with 16 titles from BOMBAY MUSIC/SHEMAROO on the back of Chapter insert!

My Pakeezah is definitely from an older batch and should be avoided.
It is Field Averaged Interlaced. It shows Pkd 5/2001 and the Disc Inner Ring says Pakeezah but no Shemaroo.
Its cover is different to what Shemaroo site of India shows. It did have an insert but diffeent from what Arsh descrbed.

Arsh's Pakeezah shows Pkd 6/2002. This one is better.
It is interlaced but Pseudo-prog (every 5th field is repeat field). Its cover can be seen at Shemaroo India site.

Mine also says Pkd. 5/2001. It has "Rs. 750.00 (incl. of all taxes)" above the package date. There are no stickers on it. The inner ring says "PAKEEZAH L0 00514 0439" and "PAKEEZAH L1 00514 00439." It is also field averaged, I believe, since I saw 4 feathered (combing) frames, then 2 non-feathered frames. The chapter insert does not have anything on the back.
