Released at the peak of her career, Lakshmi (1982) represents one of Reena Roy's finest performance. Playing a melodramatic role of a troubled courtesan, she dances to her numerous tragedies. Raj Babbar in a double role plays her husband and son. There is a special appearance by Jeetendra and Sulkshana Pandit for the Qawali: Kya Baat Hai Subhan'allah.

Well, I've been trying to raise her profile, and succeeding partially by getting Apollo to circulate this forgotten film back into the market... Unfortunately, not much can be expected from their video quality dvd prints.

Aasha (1980) is one of her best film and deserves a BEI quality transfer, although the current eros print of that film is not bad! I thought Arpan (1983) was up for a BEI release?

Interestingly, reasonable quality transfers on dvds are already available of the films you mentioned.

Nagin (1976) released by Eros - Must be one of Eros's earlier transfer as the quality is not bad.
Bezubaan (1982) released by Eros - the picture and sound is quite good, but unfortunately the subtitles are irremovable during the first half of the film.
Zakhmee (1975) released by Eros - Excellent transfer.
Sanam Teri Kasam (1982) released by Baba - One the better Baba transfers, compared to other Baba dvds that is, not DEI!

One film that is currently not available but deserves a BEI transfer is Raj Kumar Kohli's horror film: Jaani Dushman (1979). It stars, amongst Reena Roy, a bandwagon of superstars of its time including Jeetendra, Sunil Dutt, Shatrughan Sinha, Sanjeev Kumar, Vinod Mehra, Rekha, Neetu Singh, Yogeeta Bali and Bindiya Goswami.

Armaan, I wonder on what basis you call a BABA and EROS dvd good transfers... I have seen Zakhmi and believe me it was no good !

Reena Roy in Aasha... would be a good title. Apparently she was a fav of J. Om. Prakash.. Rakesh Roshan's Sasurji !, so by default..all J.Om Prakash films should be done by BEI !

Arsh miyan she was screwed literally and figuratively by MOhsin khan :p .. He was the Jerk Incarnate... saala bhag gaya Bombay se..after he took away their daughter... I wonder what is he upto now ?

He has also acted in a Mahesh Bhatt film.. Saathi
with Aditya Pancholi and Varsha Usgaonkar ..(Aaj hum tum o Sanam.. milke yeh vaada karein..main tere dil mein rahoon, tu mere dil mein rahein !)

The comments with regard to print transfers is in comparison to other eros and baba dvds, not to perfect expectations or DEI. I have just reviewed Zakhmee again: its a clean transfer and I would not have it any other way, but I'm not technically inclined to judge a dvd the way you do...

In terms of Reena Roy's Directors, three names are worthy of mentioning:

B R Ishara, who introduced her in Zaroorat (1972).

Raj Kumar Kohli, who bought her to fame as an avenging snake in Nagin (1976), and later gave her prominent roles in his multi-starrers like Jaani Dushman (1979), Badle Ki Aag (1982), and Naukar Biwi ka (1983).

And, of course, J Om Prakash. Their first film together, Apnapan (1977), won her the Best Supporting Actress Filmfare Award. The pensive song Shisha Ho Yah Dil Ho Aakhir Toot Jata immortalised her in Aasha (1980). Arpan (1983) was one of her last successful film, before J Om Prakash re-introduced her 10 years later in Aadmi Khilona Hai (1993).

It would be nice if BEI releases Apnapan as the sound quality of the Eros version is absolutely crap. The heroine in Apnapan is Sulkshana Pandit, and as legend has it, Reena Roy turned down the Filmfare Best Supporting Actress Award as she felt she was the heroine, not Sulkshana Pandit. Reena Roy's role was emotionally charged, whilst Sulkshana Pandit had the hero (Jeetendra) and all the songs!

There were two very successful Subhash Ghai's movies that Reena Roy did with Shatrughan Sinha: Kalicharan (1976) and Vishwanath (1978). The song Hawa Se Halki Hoon Aaj is from the latter.

One other film worthy of mentioning is Sau Din Saas Ke (1980). This was another female-oriented role, where she stands up against her cruel saasand rescues the obedient badi bahu Asha Parekh from the oppression of Lalita Pawar.

In the earlier part of her career, Reena Roy mainly did B grade movies with Rakesh Roshan and Vinod Mehra. She later progressed to being a showpiece in Sunil Dutt and Shatrughan Sinha's action packed movies. It was in the final phase of her career, before she decided to quit films to marry Mohsin Khan, that she had films with superstars like Rajesh Khanna and Dharmendra.

She played Rakesh Roshan's widow who rectifies the brutal character of business tycoon, Rajesh Khanna, to perfection in Dhanwan (1981). There was Ramanand Sagar's Baghavat (1982) and J P Dutta's Ghulami (1985) with Dharmendra, and Badaltey Rishtey (1978) with Rishi Kapoor.

Reena Roy's only double role was in the muslim social Ladies Tailor (1981) opposite Sanjeev Kumar.
