Taken from dvd reviewer
"VCI have announced the release of FilmFour title The Warrior for 16th September, starring Irfan Khan, Puru Chibber, Aino Annuddin, Manoj Mishra, Nanhe Khan, Chander Singh and Hemant Maahaor. Arriving with an anamorphic transfer and 5.1 Dolby Digital soundtrack, extras include a commentary track with the British director Asif Kapadia, interviews with cast and crew, deleted scenes, on-location featurette and trailer. The retail price will be £19.99.

Set in feudal India, this is a sweeping mythical adventure about a lone warrior's spiritual journey from the deserts of Rajastan to the snow capped peaks of the Himalayas. Lafcaidia is the head of a small band of warriors in the employ of a tyrannical lord. A mystical encounter leads him to reject his violent life, but this decision comes at a devastating personal cost."

Looks pretty good, I will be ordering it.

This looked good, but it flopped bigtime in the UK, even though it was shown in a few cinemas. Expect it to be shown on Channel 4 in the not too distant future.

Looks like super hi-def transfer! Had a quick glance through the DVD today and looks like a DVD to own for its quality video and audio transfer. The framing is slightly odd - presented in 2.35:1 anamorphic with Hindi DD5.1 audio - it is clean, sharp, colourful showing a very detailed picture. I say the framing is odd as you can see from the screen shots the picture mounted on top of the 16x9 frame so it will appear on the top half of an widescreen TV with the subtitles on the black bars at the bottom. Subtitles are burnt-in :doze: Few screen shots;

..special features are a treat for once which include a feature length director’s (Asif Kapadia) commentary, 'The Sheep Thief' - short film by Asif Kapadia, making of the film, deleted scenes and trailer.

More later..

Yes the main feature is from a progressive master and even the short film The Sheep Thief and the trailer is mastered in progressive mode. The other extras are video sourced.

But unlike Asoka PAL DVD which was not region coded this The Warrior DVD is region coded to PAL 2.

Is that 1 hour 44 minutes of extras? Or 1 hour 44 minutes including extras?

just to clarify things, it depends on what you call a flop ! Considering the low budget of the movie the film has done quite well on a limited release and has been doing the rounds in various film festivals where generally it has been received very well. I'll try and have a word with Asif and see if he can drop by the forums for a chat to answer any queries about the film.

Don't all Film to PAL transfers stay progressive even if they are Film to PAL video and then to DVD?? It is only NTSC where the process gets mixed up.

Film to PAL is progressive as each film frame is recorded in 2 video fields. There are no repeated fields to mess things up. As long as a DVD player (or VHS) can identify, which one is the first field and which one the 2nd, the two video fields can easily be weaved back together to give the original film frame. If the identification is messed up, then all the video fields will be combined incorrectly which I think never happens in PAL DVDs.

The reason for extras to be in Video mode is that they are shot at 50 different time periods in on second, by a video camera, as compared to Film that is half of that ("24 to 25" causes the well known 4% speed shift for film material in PAL).
