Hello everyone ( esp. those who often have a disdain for DVDs being encoded in a progressive or pseudo-progressive or interlaced fashion)

In the following article I would suggest you folks to follow a very simple test to find out if the DVD you purchased is Progressive, Pseudo Progressive or Interlaced

Pop your DVD into your player (computer of cos.) and start PowerDVD XP 4.0 ... Make sure your Video settings have been changed to a Force-Weave Mode...

Image

and you will find the option when you press the Advanced Tab.

Now we did tests for various types of DVDs. I will present my results for each case.

1.) Progressive :- Take any hollywood or DEI authored DVD (or even Superdigital authored DVDs like K3G or KKHH).. Pause it any time instance. Preferably you should do it if
there is a very fast moving scene .

Now count the number of "times" you clicked on the "step arrow" from your PowerDVD main menu toolbar.

(You can see that arrow located on the top-right hand corner of your menu-bar)... Now during each click you will see some frames with combing artifacts or with no combing artifacts.

KKHH - No combing artifacts at any instance.

2.) Pseudo-Progressive :-

a.) Aap Mujhe Acche Lagne Lage (Spark), Pyar Hi Pyar (EVP), Milan (Yashraj-Prasad Digital)... During the "clicks" most frames did not have combing artifacts. However lets say combing started at the 2nd click then the 3rd click also gave me combing... followed by 3 clicks with no combing evident on the frames... and then at the 7th and 8th clicks i get combing... This sequence is repeated. You can distinctly observe the changes in the frame information during the clicks. This extra-"garbage" information is all that it needs to screw up the whole process.
This implies that the DVD (may) have been authored from a film source to NTSC but wrongly encoded due to the addition of redundant half- frame information at periodic intervals.

Present day low-end DVD players (progressive or interlaced ) will not be able to detect these garbage frames. Hence you will be left with an overall display having combing artifacts. However the next generation smart DVD players will be able to check for these garbage frames giving you a truely progressive display.

3.) Interlaced :- These are the DVDs which cannot be rectified by even the smart DVD players. During the "clicks" you will notice that each and every frame suffers from combing artifacts. Most Likely the problems may have arisen due to a film -> PAL -> NTSC conversion wherein which a 24 frame information has been spread out over 30 frames, by reading a half frame information from the first frame and the next half frame information from the succeding frame.
The DVDs which fall under these categories are :-

Most Shemaroo titles (barring a few... We tested the Prem Rog DVD... Yeh Galiyan Yeh Chaubara fong... you can very clearly see the distortions), & believe it or not... Mujhse Dosti Karoge (Prasad Digital-Yashraj) !!! ... the song being... Aaj ke ladke I tell you...

****************************

A request for everyone. In future when you post screenshots from any DVD, please do the following test and it would be very kind of you to give us the results :)

Cheerz
