AMC Theatres Audio Format
Trying to clarify SR-D issue.

Here are the excerpts fromy my communication with AMC theatres. AMC still (2nd reply) insists that SR-D is Dolby and is Digital. Dolby site indicates it as analog.

AMC reply about my SR-D enquiry:
Our primary digital audio playback format is SDDS (Sony Dynamic Digital
Audio) with the capability of eight audio channels (if the film is mixed and the associated audio print master is done that way).
We do have a number of Dolby Digital (SRD) units installed throughout North America. This system allows for six channel audio playback.

My reply to above:
Note the bold lettered sentence below about Dolby SR (from Dolby site):
(BOLD LETTERS DON'T SHOW UP BOLD HERE ON ZULM. THEREFORE I HAVE SEPARATED THAT SENTENCE IN TH PARAGRAPH BELOW.
“The next step: Dolby SR
In 1986, Dolby Laboratories introduced a new professional recording process
called Dolby SR (spectral recording). Like Dolby noise reduction, it was a
mirror-image, encode-decode system used both when a soundtrack is recorded
and when it is played back. It provided more than twice the noise reduction
of Dolby A-type, and, moreover, permitted loud sounds with wider frequency
response and lower distortion.
The 35 mm optical soundtracks treated with Dolby SR instead of Dolby A-type
not only sounded superb in cinemas equipped with new SR processors, but also
played back satisfactorily in all cinemas.



THIS IS THE SENTENCE SUPPOSED TO BE BOLD:
This led to the situation today, whereby the analog soundtracks on virtually all prints are Dolby SR tracks.
End.


The digital age begins
The next film sound development from Dolby Laboratories was Dolby Digital,
introduced in 1992.”

is this text you are refering to from Dolby?

Thanks Ganti for the link.

The text I was refferring to was from Dolby site, as well, but from a different text page.

The text and the link that you gave, seems to be more recent. According to this, the same recording is used which is capable of being decoded into full blown 6 track digital or 4 track (digital/ analog??). Obviously, theatres may have a 6 ch decoder or a 4 ch decoder. To me it looks like, AMC theatres have a 4 track decoder which provides Left, Right, Center, and "Subwoofer or perhaps mono surround" channel. Actually, this is what the theatre attendant had also told me that SR-D is mainly a Front Speaker sound. Whether it is digital or analog, it is still not clear to me.

Yesterday I got Bytown's owner/ manager on the phone. During the long chat, he clarified that SRD is not Dolby-Digital as claimed by AMC.

He also mentioned that theatre with Dolby Digital but poor accoustics may sound worst than a theatre with reg. audio but good accostics. That's why he is reluctant to change his audio, as the present surround system in his theatre sounds really good. Moreover, DD costs a lot; if you get DD, you have to upgrade the speakers and adjust the accoustics. Otherwise, it will be a mess. Also, the kind of art movies shown in that theatre, Reg surround is adequate.

Not quite. AMC still hasn't acknowledged that SR-D is not Dolby-Digital.
