GEMINI
Staring: Vikram (Kasi), Kiran (Yaddien)
Director: Charan
Producers: AVM Studios
Music: Bharathwaj
Lyircs: Vairamuthu
The film revolves around the story of a rowdy called Gemini who falls for Manisha, an evening college student from North India. To get to know her better he enrols in the same course she is doing. Meantime his rowdy rival Teja tries to lure Gemini into a battle and both rowdies end up being arrested.
When released Gemini is branded by society and his lover as a criminal and Gemini decides to reform himself. But Teja has other plans for him...
The film is one of the highest grosser this year to release in India, and continues to run well at the box-office. This is partly due to the technical aspects of the film, which are very high. But credit should also go to the hip-hop/rock soundtrack by Bharathwaj whose song 'Oh! Podu' is a craze.
Performances are good, especially from the villain Kalabhavan Mani. Screenplay, as ever from a commercial film, is at times predictable but highly entertaining. Only the comedy track with awful comic actor Dhamu is seen as a much poor aspect in this film.
DVD quality wise is it perhaps one of Ayngaran's better releases, that presents the picture in a satisfying and dirt free manner. The DVD is presented in a 2.45:1 aspect ratio, and with a Dolby Digital 5.1 soundtrack that is very impressive.
The DVD comes with a free EPK DVD that the film had. The features are not English subtitle, which is a disadvantage.
The features include: -
A Ten Minute doc on the history of AVM studios
-This briefly showcases the influence that AVM had over Indian cinema, and also has interviews from many of the great artists in Tamil cinema including Kamal Hassan & Rajinikant.
Press Conference
-Here we see all the cast and crew at a press conference talking about the film Gemini.
How Indian songs are filmed
-This 15 minute feature shows how Indian songs were shot onto film. This is perhaps one of the better features as you do get an inside look into the world of Indian film-making without some stupid voice-over man interrupting your viewing.
Autograph Session
-A pointless feature that shows the actor Vikram and singer Anuradha Sriram in Singapore signing Autographs, during the craze of the Oh! Podu song.
The DVD is priced the same priced as their normal DVDs (something EROS should do with their overpriced two DVD sets)
Overall:
A decent presentation of the film with good picture and great sound. I am quite glad that Ayngaran didn't make any fuss of their free DVD. I guess they know that sometime next year they will be making proper Special Edition's that should get the ball rolling for Better Indian DVDs in this sparse market....
