CHECK TELETEXT ON PAGE 411 ON CHANNEL 4.....

WHAT IT SAYS

"A barely reviewed three and a half hour Bollywood movie stormed to no3 in the UK film chart, taking a record £474,000 in its debut week.

Kabhi khushi kabhie gham(aka K3G) translated as sometimes happiness sometimes sorrow opened at 41 cinmeas."

Not hard to believe as when i visited the new cineworld in bradford yesterday i felt i was in india or pakistans even the smell and atmosphere as well as the fact i saw about two gore cinegoers in the cinema where they were showing largely english films...Man it was crazy herds and herds of people even in the film people screaming swearing whistling singing along with the songs.....quite an experience compared even to Trafford centre..
Kajol had people screaming in laughter including me..

Well dispite some shite American films in the UK last week(with exception to riding in cars with boys), its nice to know Indian cinema can cross into the top three. This could also open new avenues for Indian cinema...

Shame its for K3G but it shows that 'typical' Indian films still rules...

I don't find it surprising that the movie has taken such a good opening in UK. But what does surprise and shock me is the VERY poor opening the film has taken in the US. I don't know the exact collections or rank in the box office chart. But what I do know is that it has failed to make it to the top 20 for the weekend. And considering that the No 20 movie 'Hardball' has taken in only $209,441 would mean that K3G has not even managed to collect as much. Which is awfully low since atleast 6 Hindi movies this past yr have collected more than that in their first weekend. In fact the record to date is approx $700000 for the first week. If K3G had collected as much as the existing record, it would have placed it at No. 11 on the charts which would have made it the highest debuting Hindi film.

K3G is not to be found anywhere in North American box office charts but another user named Adilr17 indicates in his posting for K3G to be number 10 in North American box office.

US Weekend Box Office (December 14 - 16, 2001)

# Title $Collection

1 Vanilla Sky $25,015,518
2 Ocean's Eleven $22,076,664
3 Not Another Teen Movie $12,615,116
4 Harry Potter $9,919,596
5 Behind Enemy Lines $5,414,981
6 Monsters, Inc. $4,980,223
7 Spy Game $2,465,455
8 Black Knight $2,035,439
9 Shallow Hal $1,492,695
10 Amelie $773,164
11 Out Cold $694,866
12 Thirteen Ghosts $430,164
13 Domestic Disturbance $425,372
14 The Wash $309,514
15 The Royal Tenenbaums $276,981
16 Life as a House $274,239
17 Training Day $229,348
18 Heist $228,606
19 The Man Who Wasn't There $225,257
20 Hardball $209,441

Hmmm.. that pretty much tells me that K3G did not even collect as much as Hardball which in terms of US dollars is $209,441. Although I am quite perplexed by the chart and figures myself and almost find it hard to believe. But then again, these charts have been around for decades and known to be very accurate.

They sure reported the figures for Mohabattein, KKHH, Kaho Na Pyar Hai, etc. Also it would be kinda hard to fudge or hide figures when the movie is being shown in some major chains owned by huge US companies. I am sure they would not agree to participate in any tax evasion scheme of Yash Raj Films. Also it would be very much in the interest of the movie from a marketing point of view for them to report such record breaking figures and have such news make headlines in the Indian entertainment world. Actually breaking into the top 10 would raise more than an interest even from Hollywood and the mainstream market.

lets just say that they have been involved in tax evasion in past and did not report figures for KNPH amongst other movies well not all figures.....Even Yash chopra in India had his house raided for tax evasion and his son being involved in non-hetrosexual sexual activities with that camp boy who starred as sha rukh close friend in DDLJ rember him with glasses and Chubby cheeks
