Lol to the "Simple Jack" poster, Ali —

.
Have you guys seen
Paa, yet? It's wonderful. I've watched just pieces of
Benjamin Button (
Paa looks to have nothing to do with it), but Balki's film is nothing like
Jack. The latter was OK, nothing particularly well-made or compelling.
Paa works in a very human way, yet the movie's not at all melodramatic or predictable. Amitabh Bachchan is amazing as Auro, and Vidya Balan and her screen-mother are terrific (Abhishek is adequate, but not memorable), but I think what really works is the screenplay: it isn't just that Bachchan delivers wonderfully as the kid, but that he's given clever things to say, and set up (by Balki) to say them in interesting situations. Even the rest of the kids at Auro's school get to do more than just fill in the background -- Vishnu has a couple of terrific scenes and lines.
As for this promotion of Amitabh Bachchan's being "re-invented," it's somewhat pointless. One still knows it's Bachchan beneath the make-up; the point is, he's in a charming role unlike any he's ever done before, and he succeeds in it amazingly.
One thing I'll say I don't much "get" is Jaya Bhaduri's introduction during the opening credits... It simply feels like an odd choice.
