Copy Protection Defeated with Felt Tip Pen
By Mike Darrah
Published May 17, 2002 @ 11:43 AM

It seems several people have devised a means to defeat the copyright protection on CD's by carefully drawing over the layer of the CD that contains the copy protection technology with a felt tip pen, thus keeping it from causing a computer to crash upon reading it.
The funniest part of this whole ordeal is that under the rules of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act, technically felt tip pens should now be made illegal as they contribute to the break down of this copyright protection technology.

In a blatant attempt to show some of the absurdity of the Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) many members of the on-line community are now actually pushing to make felt tip pen's illegal to prove their point.

In some what related news, it seems some folks have also figured out how to defeat most standardized finger print detection systems by creating a finger out of Gummi Bears. Does this now mean that we will be forced to outlaw our favorite sticky snack also?

*Sigh* It seems congress is so happy at their beloved new DMCA laws they are actually toasting to them with Champagne. Are our congressional leaders ever going to really understand technology and stand up for the people and not the industries that give them money to run for office? :D

Heh, that's pretty damn funny. They spend millions on developing some supposedly fool-proof copy protection system, only to have it defeated not by computer hackers, but by a felt tip pen!

Where is this layer anyways?
