has been tagged an "A" certificate and the director/cast are mighty upset.

Flumdog Millionaire

I believe that Vishal Bhardwaj is very influenced by the British, of course fans of him would know of his fascination with William Shakespeare by him presenting wonderful adaptation’s on screen but what was more of a surprise for me was that he keeps that fascination away from this ‘Kaminey’ and makes a film that we in England would term as a ‘Guy Ritchie’ kind of film, where the storyline can be made as any major commercial movie yet you feel as if your watching an art movie

However one thing is to try and the other is to achieve and Vishal Bhardwaj achieves that!

Scene has a serious moment, serious moment BANG comedy, serious moment, serious moment BANG comedy – QUALITY screenplay
There happens to be a scene to which I can make an example of as to what I mean by this – on finding out that Guddu’s girlfriend Sweety is pregnant , suddenly we get a flashback as to the night of sin of that pregnancy – we see Guddu finding something with a horny girlfriend around, suddenly he stops finding and things begin to steam up, suddenly Guddu starts finding something again and states he can’t find his kama sutra branded condoms!

Its humour at its best because it happens to be a comic scenario, yet you won’t realise it

The storyline of the movie is kept quite basic about Twins who seem to hate one another – one has a lisp and the other stammers - the bad brother with the lisp(Charlie) is involved in a chase from a gangster and some crooked cops over stolen drugs worth INR 10 crores, while the good brother that stammers(Guddu) has made a gangster cum politician’s sister pregnant and plans to get married to her knowing of what this mistake of his, could lead too!

The film shows that you don’t have to be a bad guy to be a scoundrel, even good guys make mistakes which term them as scoundrels – in this case – KAMINEY!
Shahid Kapoor gets his best role till date and yes he does very well, a lot may argue that his performance as Charlie is much better than Guddu but I believe that has a lot to do with his image, I seriously did not find anything wrong with him – improvement is the key for actors of Shahid Kapoor’s age and over the years we can see that his hard work is paying off but it shouldn’t stop here, a real good performance by a potential superstar of the future! Priyanka Chopra does her part well,. Supporting cast is excellent, forgive me for not knowing their names but they were fantastic – the Bengali brothers, Tashi, Afghani bhai, the Africans, the corrupt cops, the right hand men of the crazy politician are all well placed

Now the crazy politician played by Amole Gupte happens to be a writer I believe – well sir you have just found yourself a new career, the star of the show, I still cannot get that part out of my head where he is speaking on the phone to his sister who happens to be getting married to a non-maharashtrian and simply says in Hindi “why you do this, why you give me a bad name” and its the subtlety of his dialogue delivery and facial expression which is hilarious..... TOP MAN!
Though his best scene is the one where he enters Charlie’s shack and begins to ask the questions, of course the direction has a lot to do with it but he was a real stand out in that excellent scene.

Vishal’s music sense, as always, is very good keeping in mind that they don’t hamper the movies narrative – ‘Dhan te Naaa’ stand outs as probably one of the most insane song I’ve heard for a while, yet its a brilliant song, especially where it comes in the movie.

The film as expected has a very atmospheric feel, that is the films plus point – its cinematography is on par excellence right from the start where we see Shahid on the train tracks. However the part where you can see every technical aspects plus point is after the ‘Dhan te naaa’ song where Shahid and his friend are about to do a drug deal and in excitement they begin laughing joking and dancing in the rain – the view that it gave to me as an audience was that of ‘dance, joke and laugh as much as you like, your about to get it boys!’ its cinematography, its dialogues with that viscous echo, the background score with the rain drops – BRILLIANT, the film is a technical wizard and full respect to all the people involved. I liked the action scenes too, especially the climax, more of which a smoke screen for the viewer but the realism of an incident such as that is shown properly.

After all that, I don’t really need to go into ‘how good Vishal is as a director’ – though I would point out that the way in which the film is made, the man certainly is a credit to the word ‘Director’ – TOP MAN!

My biggest disappointment with this film is our Indian film audience. Walking into the auditorium I see around a hundred people in the late show, by the end there was a maximum of twenty people. I can’t criticise anyone who didn’t like the film because I understand that it’s not that regular commercial movie that people prefer. The reason why I pointed this is because these happen to be the same people that come up with criticism like ‘Bollywood makes the same thing all the time, only know how to sing and dance’ yet they won’t even sit through a movie because it’s not a regular kind of film. The Indian film audience happens to be the most BAKWAAS audience in the world and it’s sad that some won’t even sit through a movie till the God damn end of it but I guess WHO CARES.....

Thank God for VIshal Bhardwaj

5 out of 5

MASTERPIECE MOVIE MAKING

Film: Kaminey
Starring: Shahid Kapoor, Priyanka Chopra, Amol Gupte, Chandan Roy Sanyal & Shiv Kumar Subramaniam
Director: Vishal Bhardwaj
Producer: Ronnie Screwvala
Music: Vishal Bhardwaj
Release: 14th August

BK INFO: After a long day's of hard work, I style up to shoot for the cinema only noticing that the cinema was crowded for both movies, which do I watch? I wasnt really fussed but seeing Kaminey was in a bigger screen I decided to shoot for this one. After acing it out with Maqbool, Omkara and producing No Smoking, Vishal Bhardwaj suprising comes back to direction after 3 years with an upcoming actor who has not made it too high in the industry just yet and neither an acclaimed actor. So Friday night, Kaminey was done.

Ups
To begin with, Kaminey is a script to die for. I would murder people just to get my hands on a script like Kaminey and its the script thats makes the film stand out. It may not be everyone's cut of tea and some people may even call it a let down screenplay (god help them) but them sort of people cannot deal with films like Kaminey. Like Vishal's last flicks Maqbool, Omkara and No Smoking which rank amongst the best film ever offbeat films in Bollywood, Kaminey is too listed here. The more you say the less, Kaminey has to be the finest we have seen in years. Kaminey is a film about its characters, its two twins, three Bengali gangster brothers, One loose party canidate, one drug ganglord and two corrupt cops who are the 'kaminey', the people who make the film. The film itself speaks 100 words, and thats too in different accents. A fine piece of art being cleaned in Bollywood and ranks amongst the best.

Downs
The biggest drawback is being the mainlead role of Charlie being given to the wrong actor to enhance. Charlie could have been done by someone much better and a someone who could looks a bit more touch. Also, the reason behing the split between the two brothers could have been more sensible are believable.

Scenes

- The Bengali Brothers
- The Hotel Part
- Brother Swap
- Killing of Mikhail
- Guddu's Interigation
- Charlie vs Guddu
- Climax

Performances

(in order of better performance)

Amol Gupte has to be the real star of the film. Honestly, a true talented writer and now a great talented actor. The thing with Gupte is that he doesnt just act well but he looks like Bhope and this is where he plays his cards. An ace performace!

Shahid Kapoor does well in the role of Guddu, the role which he looks and suit him to the T. He fails as Charlie as these roles are not made for him, another actor could have done better easily.

Chandan Roy Sanyal works wonders as Mikhail, the arrogant and crazy gangster brother. Good to see this guy.

Shiv Kumar Subramaniam is another guy to watch out for!

Priyanka Chopra isnt important to the script but does her part well

Music
'Dhan Tan Nan' being the big craze of this era works wonders in the film as well and Vishal's last two film No Smoking (Phoonk De) and Omkara (Beedi) had two smash hits, but 'Dhan Tan Nan' was something else. 'Fatak' and 'Pehli Baar' are also wonderful.

Overall
Kaminey is not a film I would go out of my way to watch in a cinema but something I would prefer to watch at home, it falls in to the catergory of A Wednesday, No Smoking and Stoneman Murders. Vishal has made something we could call a masterpiece in our time after giving us two other masterpieces last with Omkara and No Smoking. Vishal has to be one of the finest directors on earth. The audience he aims at wont be very happy with the film as more and more commerical films have ruled the cinema in this day and age. Kaminey is not a cinema film, but you still cannot diagree about the fact that the film is a wonder.

My personal rating for 'Kaminey' is 4 out of 5 stars. Although, I have a feeling that this is a movie that will play better in a second viewing and thus might rate even higher. With so many characters and so much going on it is hard to grasp the small nuances in the film the first time around. Which ever way you look at it, the film is a milestone in Indian cinema and finally we have a director in Vishal, who treats his audience with intelligence and does not bother with mundane explanations of characters and their motivations.

It would be wrong and maybe even foolhardy to expect Shahid to outdo his father's performance in Maqbool, after all he is one of the greatest Indian actors and his performance in Maqbool is one of his best. Having said that, I think Shahid has performed quite credibly in Kaminey, both as Guddu and maybe even better off as Charlie. Personally I would put his performance in the film right at the top of the best performances of the year list.
