Revaluation In The Village!

Manmohan Singh. The man that has been behind bringing Punjabi cinema back to the standard it should be at. After having four blockbusters (Mitti Wajaan Mardi wasnt that successful) he is back with his 6th Punjabi film. Manmohan this time tries to experiment by adding the famous Punjabi MP Navjot Singh Sidhu and brings back the famous old Gugu Gill back to Punjabi cinema after a long time. Mera Pind is supposed to be the 'Rab Ne Bana Di Jodi' of Punjabi
cinema for 2008.

Getting straight down to business. The first half is an enjoyable watch, the first half gives the impression of one of them films that it will catch you unaware in some of the parts. In the first half the main parts that keep you glued is Rana Ranbir's scenes and the problem with Harbhajan's family. The entry of Navjot Sidhu (playing Sidhu Saab) make you feel, that maybe he is here to save the day? Maybe he is going to make the film even better after the intermission?

Going into the second half, the film collapses badly. You cannot believe how someone like Manmohan Singh who has pulled off so many entertaining films in the past go can so badly wrong. Manmohan seems to have chosen the wrong subject or wrong message to give to the people, infact, its hard to even dig out the message at one stage. He seems to have pulled the film so badly that its let go off and smacked him back! The last 30-40 mins just dont stop at all. Manmohan this time has screwed over so badly.

The songs are an element that keep you awake in the second half. Songs like 'Main Haan Jatt' which is proberly one of the best songs I have heardrecently (And even Gugu Gill's small part in there seemed good too) And the other being 'Mittran De Dabba' except for that, the rest of the songs are between average to belowe average.

There is nothing really to talk about in the performances side. The only two performances that stand tall are by Harbhajan Maan and Gugu Gill.

Harbhajan Maan seems he wants a little change and he does show a matter of improvement from his last performances especially in his emotional scenes.

Gugu Gill being the classy actor he is, pulls off this role pretty perfectly. Especially his little act in the song 'Main Haan Jatt'

Navjot Singh Sidhu is, hmmm, wasted more or less. Except for a few decent dialouges he goes over the top.

Rana Ranbir is excellent!

Kimi Verma looks impressive and acts impressive too

Gurpreet Ghuggi is wasted.

Overall: The film is a huge dissapointment. Manmohan this time has let people down badly and does it in such a cunning manner too. The film at the box office may fair well because of the huge hype overseas and in Punjab, but truly the film is not worth it! Bad subject and awful direction.

Sengh's Rating:Image

Strict OKAY. Not really worth the hassle

Babbu Maan's Hashar trailer

Now thats looks like a film! True Jatt one too!

IMho, MMS sounded/appeared fresh authentic down to his roots for root audience but since JAN onwards now seems like same film, over and over in shankar, ghaii, ramu and bharjatya style..I would call it regressive cinema! or cinema stuck in time and place :( Did I miss yrf /Johar and ? yrf did try pushing down your throat, N&N, SN, KANK etc for sake of style and progressive corruptness, acceptance in society.

and then it is Sarook/FK group, who are recycling these recessive re makes, by mix and match :(

I agree with u Arsh. His films are seem to make good money and everyone enjoys seems to enjoy these movies too.
I think the Punjabis aint looking for any type of quality, just clean, commercial, entertaining cinema.

And everytime it does the trick! I think sometimes his films do have good messages for the Punjabi community, but this
was plain stupid!

Every film since then is beating around the same BUSH  clean/famil (entertainers), you might be right on that, if it does end up entertaining you. :D

It does entertain me to a certain point, but the script for this one was pretty lousy

But before JAN, some of the Punjabi films were unbearable and not watchable with ur family

I really really really liked it. More than Manmohan Singh's previous films.

Clean family entertainer with message and spicy/ nostalgic dialogs. Of course you have to be able to understand the Punjabi dialogs to get the humour. Punjabi spoken is not Punjabi in Hindi tune but it's Punjabi the way it's or used to be spoken in Punjab. Like, "Main Jadon Vee Moode Aana Vaan, Tu Suiyee Kuttee Wang Mere Pichhe eee Pai Jaani Aein. No vulgarity but spicy enough.

It's a regional film with limited audience so don't expect Bollywood superstars. Cinematography is lavish, Harbhajan Mann's music, as always, is excellent. A good 160-165 min Punjabi entertainer.

------------------
Not sure what's exact meaning of "Suiyee": Pregnant or "just gave birth to -- " . I think it's the later ??

This Singh King dialog is somewhat vulgar as compared to Mera Pind language, IMHO. Moreover, Singh King dialogs were mostly Hinjabi even when they were supposed to speak Punjabi. Not so in Mera Pind. Just day to day dialet in Punjab or the way we speak at home.

I haven't seen this yet but probably will once it's out on dvd. Out of all his films, the only one I enjoyed was "Mitti Waajan Maardi". Even the music of that film was, in my opinion, the best out of all of them with "Jee Aayan Nu" being a close second. However I'm not really feeling the music of "Mera Pind" except for the songs "Main haan Jatt" and "Chan naal chanani". Hopefully it will grow on me.

There you are Des Hoya Pardes ! I really loved dat. JAN was good despite no sub titles! Since then two more were kinda thematically similar and then same cast over and over, lost my interest! :(
