Are any of the DVDs floating around in the original 2.35:1 aspect ratio of the movie? I have the Yash Raj DVD, a huge disappointment, in a pan and scan ratio. I know of other versions of the film:
EROS
SKY
SPARK
ULTRA
Can any zulm.net member advise me on this?
The Ultra DVD of Pyaasa seems to be the most complete running around 141 minutes and much better than the terrible EROS DVD I had to throw in the bin.

KKP was shot in both CinemaScope and Academy (1.37:1) ratios. Perhaps the DVDs are the latter and not pan-and-scan?

I have the "Sky" version (it's in the 4:3 aspect ratio), and (though the print is far from "stellar") it really does appear to be cropped down from 2.35:1.

The Ultra DVD (I have it now) is the only DVD on market which uses the original Cinemascope (2.35:1 ratio) print although it is presented in a cropped non-anamorphic (1.85:1) transfer.

Barely acceptable, but still much superior to the Yash Raj and Sky versions (at least from original Cinemascope negative) and runs at least 7 minutes longer at about 143 minutes.

Hi,

Where can I get these Ultra versions of Pyaasa and Kaagaz ke Phool (with somewhat reasonable shipping to europe)?
Thanks for the answer!

Regards,

Dennis

the eros version is presented letterboxed- however the size of the black bars changes throughout the movie- the picture quality sux- but is watchable. its also non amnormopic - and has a dolby digital mono soundtrack - its such a good movie- you should def watch it even if the dvds arent that good.

Another massacre of a Guru Dutt film. :(

Did anyone catch the screening of this at the Tongues on Fire film festival in the UK earlier this year? Was it screened from a film print or a DVD?

I have KKP @ YRF disc; from what I understand, it was shot in it's original 4:3....the cinemascope is the same thing they did with Sholay - just crop top & bottom to get the leterbox/scope feel...

farooq, from the image below, there are chances that it was actually shot (also in) 2.35:1 and not force-matted from the 4x3 version... what do you say?
