1) Alavandhan : Kamal Haasan, Raveena Tandon, Manisha Koirala.
Dir: Suresh Krishna Mus: Shanker-Ehsaan-Loy

Tamil version of Abhay. DEI's Abhay disk suffers from the "squashed video" problem, hence this might be the better option for people willing to tolerate subtitles. Sunny has mentioned though, that a 2 disk Special Edition will be released next year...

2) Unnidaththil Ennai Koduthen: Karthik, Ajith, Roja
Dir: Vikraman Mus: S. A. Rajkumar

Maybe Sunny could update us about the story line of this Ajith starrer? Vikraman is a decent director with a few hits behind him, though.

3) Chocklet: Prashanth, Jaya
Dir: Venkatesh Mus: Deva

4) Thulli Thirintha Kalam: Arun Kumar, Khushboo
Dir:Sarath Mus: Jeyanth

If this is the movie I think it is, Khushboo moves into a new neighbourhood, sees a bunch of loafers led by Arun Kumar, and tries to reform them.

5) Thavasi: Vijaykanth, Nasser, Soundarya
Dir: Udayashanker Mus: Vidyasagar

Vijayakanth in double role as father and son. The father, as vilage elder, wrongly charges an innocent guy with theft. The guy commits suicide, is proven inncocent later, and the father promptly sends the son as replacement to the dead guy's home

6) Suryan: Sarath Kumar, Roja
Dir: Pavithran Mus: Deva

Very good action movie for its time (I think it was released in the early 90's). "South Indian Schwarzenegger" Sharath Kumar excels in action (thankfully, no real need for him to display his acting capabilities) and Roja is seductive. Big explosions, a huge man bashing in somebody's head, some decent songs, and for the SKNaths amongst us :sly:, a psycho villain who gets his kick by tying down a girl wearing minimum clothing, and letting loose live crabs. What more can you ask for? :DD:

Chaver.

Unnidaththil Ennai Koduthen
It is a story of a small time crook who makes his girlfriend into a famous Indian singer. Its a sweet little story with some nice moments of romance and comedy.

Ayngaran's Aala vanhdhan is much better quality then the Hindi DEI's version Abhay, as the colours are neo bright (as original shot). But I wuld wait for the 2disc version coming soon (trust me it will be worth the wait).

I thought Thavsi had a good story but the overweight actor Vijayakant was awful!

Also avoid the badly directed film Red, which is a remake of the better film Dheena but has more of Ajith's political views then story, and the dam right awful teen college flick Chocolate.

Ones I would recommend are Naandha (the Tamil Mother India of Y2K) and Kasi (a film BR Chopra might have directed if he'd continued to make movies). Also good is the new Kamal flick PSK which I loved from its comedy to its melodrama.

1) Naan Mahan Alle: Rajinikanth, Radha
Dir: S. P. Muthuraman Mus: Ilayaraja

2) Majnu: Prashanth, Raghuvaran, Rinki Khanna
Dir: Murali Mus: Harris Jeyaraj

Prashanth falls in love with Rinki Khanna, Rinki is suspected of being a terorrist, blah blah blah... I wonder how Ayngaran can possibly make money on this one.

3) Manathai Thirudi Vittal: Prabhu Deva, Kousalya, Gayatri
Dir: Narayanamoorthy Mus: Yuvanshanker Raja

One man, two women, Tamil movie. Enough said.

4) Vivaramana Aalu: Sathyaraj, Devayani
Dir: Selvabharathy Mus: Deva

Crook Sathyaraj weds Devayani for money, then tries to marry Mumtaz. Branded a comedy.

5) Azhagi: Parthiban, Nandita Das, Devayani
Dir: Thangar Bachan Mus: Ilayaraja

Probably the best of the lot, cinematographer-turned-director Thangar Bachan tells the story of a boy's first love, and how he deals with the girl when they meet again many years later. Parthipan plays the role of the married man who meets his old flame (Nandita Das) and has to deal with her even though he's now married to Devayani. Pretty good movie, refreshingly devoid of the overt sentimentality and cliches of contemporary Tamil movies.

I thought Manjnu was an awful film but the technical details was quite good, loved the cinematography & the background score!

The film Manathai Thirudi Vittal was quite a good flick and the twist in the film is quite shocking at first (even though the way it is shown in the film could have been more better). Its a good plot and has a good ending. Also has a great score by Yuvan Shankar Raja who is fast becoming the next best music director since A R Rahman (IMHO).

Aghazhi is the best out of the lot, but I thought the ending was quite stupid, no mother would dump thier child for the reasons given in the film, but Nanditha Das acting rocks!

2) Sollamale: Livingstone, Kousalya
Dir: Sasi Mus: Bobby

hey sunny or anyone w/knowledge of ayngaran DVDs

I just recently got the DVD of DHILL. Good flick but it seemed that the sound wasn't proper 5.1 even though the movie is not that old.

Is it the DVD or my aging player? Please confirm.

I can post some screenshots in stuff if you haven't done so already Sunny!

Dhil is a good flick, loved the Hindi villain in it A. Vidyarthi was top!

The DVD though is slightly messed up as Ayngaran used the mono print instead of the original DTS soundtrack. Have spoken to them about this and expecting some feedback from them soon. In the meantime you can complain to them about this issue on thier e-mail address. If more complains are seen or heard the more chance of them acting upon it asap. Thier e-mail add is mailto:sales@ayngaran.com

That's not what I call a slight mess up. It qualifies as a sin in my bible...:)

Kannupada Poguthaiya: Vijayakanth, Simran
Dir: Rajakumaran Mus: S. A. Rajkumar

Ayngaran continues to release good DVDs of less-deserving movies, while negatives of classics from the 70's, 80's and the early 90's rot in some damp Indian wherehouse. Where's 16 Vayathinile (At the Age of 16 - Kamalhaasan, Rajanikanth, Sridevi), or Moondram Pirai (the original Sadma, with Kamalhaasan and Sridevi), or Mudhal Mariyathai (Shivaji Ganeshan, Radha) or Thevar Magan (the original Virasat with Kamalhaasan, Shivaji Ganeshan, Gauthami and Revathi)?

I think Pyramid has released 16 Vayathinile and Thevar Magan. Needless to say, the quality is probably shit. Pyramid is worse than even Eros. And where are the classic black and white films from Ayngaran? Aalayamani, Navarathiri, Parasakthi, which was Sivaji's first film, are some films which Ayngaran should release. I'll email them about these titles if you email them about the titles you mentioned :-)

The 5.1 sound on each of these DVD's is simply stunning, while the picture quality on Punnagai Desam is the best out of the three. Thamizh and Thamizhan have good picture quality but it is marred by wear and tear which is odd as the films was only released a couple of months back!

Punnagai Desam is the best film out of the three, as the story about four friends trying to achive thier ambitions is quite melodramatic in a touching way, and debut actor Tarun is quite impressive.

On the other hand Simran does look stunning in the songs of Thamizh and is the only reason I bought this disc! This gal should move back to Hindi films she would give Kareena and Amisha a harsh competition in looks and talent.
