Marion Cotillard wins Oscar for best actress

Marion Cotillard won the Academy Award as best actress for her portrayal of legendary chanteuse Edith Piaf in "La Vie en Rose" to become the first French performer since 1960 to earn an Oscar in the category.

It was the first nomination for Cotillard, who was a favorite coming into Sunday's award show in Hollywood.

The 32-year-old actress stunned audiences and critics at home and abroad with her physical transformation in the film that traces the life of Piaf, who achieved international fame after being raised by her grandmother in a brothel but saw her life cut short by drug and alcohol abuse.

The win comes just days after Paris-born Cotillard took home the French film industry's coveted Cesar award for best actress for "La Mome," as the Piaf biopic is called in her homeland. She also picked up both a British BAFTA and a Golden Globe for her role.

Simone Signoret won the best actress Oscar in 1960 for her leading role in "Room at the Top" and was the last French woman to do so, although several others, including Catherine Deneuve and Isabelle Adjani, have been nominated.

In the best actress category, Cotillard competed with Julie Christie ("Away From Her"), newcomer Ellen Page ("Juno"), Laura Linney ("The Savages") and Cate Blanchett ("Elizabeth: The Golden Age").

Juno was okay. It had some good points, but it had some pretty bad points as well. The screenplay win was undeserved. OTOH, No Country for Old Men and There Will Be Blood were fantastic films. NCOM was the Coens' best film in a while.

Not seen Juno, There Will Be Blood or Assassination of Jesse James yet.

No Country For Old Men is brilliant and Javier Bardem was amazing in the movie.

Atonement - felt it was bit over rated, certainly didn't think it was Oscar material. The look and the way it's filmed is really good.

Michael Clayton - not amazing, but better than okay. This film has one of the coldest killing scene witnessed on film

Ashamed to say not seen any of the best foreign language film yet (not even heard of most of them )

One other I've seen from the lists is American Gangster - hmmmm bit over long and dragging but as usual Denzel Washington & Russell Crowe are brilliant to watch. On a side note saw this other similar Hong Kong movie called Moon to/Protégé ( http://imdb.com/title/tt0841150/ ) which I thought was really good - follows the drug trade in similar detail to American Gangster but as usual the HK movie has more style

Top shot is from the Oscars screener DVD(rip ) 1.80:1, second one is from the retail R1 DVD 2.35:1 and third is from the Bluray rip (down-scaled to 720p) which is like R1 DVD @ 2.35:1.

It is oscar likeness of British kinda dramas! But no doubt Keira Knightly going places.

Same imho nominating DEP has become fashionable for OSCARS too!

She was a sidekick in BILB, and thereafter, never looked backward, while main star of BILB ended up in ER thats abt it!

I thought too, Javier Badem was mind blowing in that film.

Besides the supporting actress award for Michael Clayton did not quite appeal to me, I thought gal in gone baby gone was way better.

re Kate Blanchet, and actress like Hillary Swank should take sabbatical from Oscars, too much , too frequent, even though I still believe Kate Blanchet is a tremendous actress!! I wish I could say the same for being tired watching, SRK. HRITHIK, Bachans, PREITY , Rani over and over and over the board. from right to left.

But my respect for OSCAR became A++ when it was announced: Winner - Marion Cotillard, La Vie en Rose. I reminded that clip and was blown away! and then suddenly I remembered that why this film was awarded BEST MAKE UP artist too!



OVERALL, I thought there was TOO MUCH RED @ OSCARS this year! John Stewart was OK!

If bollywood his joke on Cate Blanchet would become a matter of National offense lol.

I thought JUNO was good but not Oscar worthy. Transformers special effects deserved an Oscar. Assassination of Jesse James is an excellent film! No Country was also great. I am yet to see There will be blood and Atonement.

For the first time I think I agree with most of the winners at this years Oscars.

Atonement was quite good but didn't deserve to win, I was not surprised it won the Bafta because the Brits did alot to promote this film that otherwise wouldn't have been up there. I don't think it stood a chance against No country, There will be blood or Michael Clayton.
Juno was quite good but I feel it is way overrated by it's supporters. Ellen Page shouldn't have been nominated, there was nothing so special in her performance. Angelina Jolie was totally snubbed for the best actress nomination for "A mighty heart", which she did a great job. I take it Tabu didn't make the nominations for the Namesake, but she did better than Ellen Page.
Sadly "The Assasination of Jesse James" was snubbed for a best picture nomination. I believe that it should've been there instead of Juno or Atonement.

As for the best actor, it only belonged to Day-Lewis his performance was easily the best. Did you guys see that he even kissed George Clooney . Poor Viggo Mortensen after doing so much research for getting into the character for Eastern Promises, he just couldn't win against the competition. If it was another year where Day-lewis wasn't nominated maybe he would've won.

For best actress, Marion Cotillard rightfully deserved it. It would've been a great injustice if she hadn't won. After seeing "La Vie En Rose" I knew she had to win awards for it. She seemed alot more comfortable winning an oscar compared to when she won the Bafta - where she was a wreck, probabaly because she now had the experience of winning.

Javier Barden deserved his oscar for supporting actor, though I think Tom Wilkinson came close.

I haven't seen any of those foreign language films (funny to think that bollywood thought Eklavya had a chance), though I saw Persepolis which was for best animated feature. Ratatouille rightfully won the oscar. Strange that La Vie en rose wasn't up for a best foreign language oscar.

I was not much impressed with SUPPORTING ACTRESS though? I thought GONE BABY was better!

I haven't had a chance to watch any of the recent films. However, I just finished watching "Atonement" and thought it was great, beautiful film. Now I'll try to watch "No Country for Old Men" over the weekend. Really looking forward to that one.

I haven't seen Gone baby gone, so I can't say. I'm sure there were other great supporting actress hopefuls that were not even nominated that probably gave the best performance, but they have to choose by what's there. I still scratch my head wondering how the hell could've Ellen Page have been nominated best actress for Juno. That's got to be the most overrated film of the past year. Angelina Jolie gave a much better performance in "A mighty heart" and Tabu was great in the Namesake yet they were both snubbed.

I saw ELIZBETH THE GOLDEN AGE finally( on HD DVD) ofcourse) and I would say even not as good as prequel, it was way more engrossing film than JA.and I thought critics ripped that apart. In every sections it was miles ahead!

Cate Blanchet was simply tremendous! I did like Geoffery Rush plus King Philips character! Good view!

Background music was WORLD CLASS whether Rehman or whoever was for whatever passages.
