Variety review:

Taare zameen par: Every Child is Special
(India)
By DEREK ELLEYA UTV release of a PVR Pictures presentation of an Aamir Khan Prods. production. Produced by Khan. Executive producer, B. Shrinivas Rao. Co-producers, Ajay Bijli, Sanjeev K. Bijli. Directed by Aamir Khan. Creative director, Amole Gupte. Screenplay, Gupte.

With: Darsheel Safary, Aamir Khan, Tanay Chheda, Sachet Engineer, Tisca Chopra, Vipin Sharma, Lalitha Lajmi.

Actor-producer Aamir Khan ("Lagaan," "Rang de basanti") makes a bland helming debut with "Taare zameen par," whose handle, "Every Child Is Special" sums up its touchy-feely-ness. Pic about a special-needs kid's plight is so resolutely caring -- and devoid of real drama and interesting characters -- that it should have "approved by the Dyslexia Assn." stamped on the posters. Two-and-a-half-hour picture doesn't even recognize the tyke's obvious problem until after the intermission, and then fails to capitalize on it dramatically. Movie opened slow worldwide Dec. 21, buried by masala crowdpleaser "Welcome."
Eight-year-old Mumbai misfit Ishaan (buck-toothed Darsheel Safary) is mocked by his classmates and scolded by his parents (Vipin Sharma, Tisca Chopra) for underachieving. Sent to an expensive boarding school in hilly Panchgani, he finally gets help from an unconventional art teacher, Ram (Khan), who realizes why Ishaan keeps saying, "The letters are dancing." Cue inclusive, soggy finale. Sole miracle is how Khan and "creative director" and scripter Amole Gupte manage to keep so few balls in the air for so long. Rich tech credits, clever animated inserts and Khan's own pixie-like perf help. Hindi part of title means "Stars on Earth."

Camera (color, widescreen), Setu; editors, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; music, Shankar-Ehsaan-Loy; lyrics, Prasoon Joshi; production designer, Shruti Gupte; costume designer, Priyanjali Lahiri. Reviewed at Cineworld Shaftesbury Avenue 1, London, Dec. 22, 2007. Running time: 155 MIN. (I: 69 MIN.: II: 86 MIN.)

Did you guys notice that this film is now in the IMDB top 250 films of all time! No joke, check it out, it's currently at 152. It's appears to be the only Indian film in there.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0986264/

Can this really be better than Lagaan, Black Friday, Sholay and Satyajit Ray's films?
And to think that I was not even going to bother seeing this film! Now I have to see it a.s.a.p.
Screw the Variety review above!

I've actually emailed Roger Ebert about this movie. I'm hoping that it gets some more attention because I'm thoroughly convinced that this can have a wider international audience. My friend is friends with the film critic at LA Weekly (who does Bollywood reviews). I think he'll try to get him to see it as well.

Ebert has made positive feedback on Bollywood films in the past. While he doesn't watch them regularly, he admits he enjoys them. So I don't see why he wouldn't give TZP a fair shake.

If Ebert can give Taal 3 1/2 stars. After watching TZP, he'll salute it along aside an Orson Welles masterpiece.

The film was at 152 yesterday on IMDB, today it's at 117! What's going on? Are fans e-mailing each other to vote high for this film or is it really that good? At the message boards there seems to be a campaign to get this film into the IMDB top 250. I'm gonna go see this film and it had better be nothing short of remarkable, judging by all the hype around it.

On aamir khan's blog there are fans urging each other to vote on IMDB -- I guess that's one of the reasons ;-)

The news is that T-Series will release/distribute the dvd in India -- they have shown promise in Bhool Bhulaiyya but I am so worried they'll not be able to do justice to this exceptional subject/movie. I am disappointed this title did not go to Excel Home Videos who would have made this into a collector's delight... ah!
