Mastering the art of `Cut-Copy-Paste`!

By Gaurav Malani

Originality is a term conspicuous by its very absence in Bollywood. Remake, Inspiration, Tribute – whatever is the excuse, there's no denying to the fact that there's a dearth of original ideas in Bollywood. But does that make our filmmakers any less talented? Certainly not!

Though not high on creativity, at least these filmmakers have mastered the art of 'Cut- Copy-Paste', which is no less challenging. As per the requirements of this art, these filmmakers need to Copy the original film, Cut out what's unnecessary or objectionable with respect to Hindi cinema and Paste the requisite amount of masala to Bollywoodize it (which most often comes in the form of songs and things alike).

Moreover gone are the days when audiences (and even critics) groused on rehashed versions. Off lately the viewers have lived up to remakes. As far as the final product is engaging, audiences no more mind adaptations.

Talking about 2003, like every other year this year too had it's share of reworks. East, west, north or south, the filmmakers didn't hesitate to borrow ideas from any directions.

West is the best

Hollywood as always remained the motherboard of inspiration. 2003 was a thrilling year, actually a year full of thriller films, in Bollywood. And the west, being the best thriller factory, was the principal source of inspiration. But Bollywood didn't remain back in seeking ideas for love, romance and relational themes too.

Check out the detailed list of Hollywood rip-offs…

Going down south

Going down south is the next best alternative for Bollywood to derive ideas. Perhaps the adaptation factor turns out to be much easier over here as the makers don't have to work hard on Indianizing the film.

Here's the formal list of South Indian remakes…

Remake
Original

Tujhe Meri Kasam
Niram (Malayalam) Nuvve Kavali (Telegu)

Dum
Dhil (Telegu)

Khushi
Kushi (Tamil)

Yeh Dil
Nuvvu Nenu (Telegu)

Hungama
Poochek Oru Mookuthi (Malayalam)

Tere Naam
Sethu (Tamil)

Calcutta Mail
Choodalani Vundi (Telegu)

The Bollywood recycle factory

Remake
Original

Bollywood Hollywood
Dulhan Wahi Jo Piya Mann Bhaye

Mein Prem Ki Diwani Hoon
Chitchor (1976)

What more, even the biggest hits of the year pursued loose inspirations from some classic movies. Like Karan Johar's Kal Ho Naa Ho, thematically reminded one of Rajesh Khanna's Anand (though only in the last reel). Ravi Chopra's Baghban was faintly reminiscent of another Rajesh Khanna starrer Avtar. Ramgopal Verma had almost rehashed his own film Raat to give it a more urban look in Bhoot. Rajkumar Hirani's Munnabhai… had reflections of Robin Williams of Patch Adams. And the world knows it now that Rakesh Roshan spinned-off a Jadoo from Steven Speilberg's E.T

But then who is complaining as far as the final product is satisfying…
