Coming Soon: Big budget remakes
It looks like originality has gone out of the window.
All the big releases coming up are either remakes or inspired from earlier films. We take a look.
Om Shanti Om
Inspired by Chances Are
Farah Khan's Om Shanti Om is inspired by 1989 Hollywood movie Chances Are directed by Emile Ardolino and starring Cybill Shepherd, Robert Downey Jr, Ryan O'Neal, Christopher McDonald and Mary Stuart Masterson.
In the original, Christopher McDonald is happily married to Cybill Shepherd. While on his way home to celebrate his first wedding anniversary, he meets with an accident and is reborn as Robert Downey Jr. He then falls in love with his own daughter (Mary Stuart Masterson). He remembers his past when Mary Stuart Masterson invites him home. By now his wife has grown old and of course, fails to recognise him.
Om Shanti Om, which stars Shah Rukh Khan and Deepika Padukone, is about reincarnation as well. Here, Deepika is a huge star of the 1970s and Shah Rukh Khan a junior artist. Both fall in love with each other. However, SRK gets murdered. He is reborn, and the story shifts to the present day where he goes in search of his lost love.
