I am interested in buying a DVD recorder so I can transfer my old video tapes to DVD and record live television. I was looking at a few products online and I came across one DVD recorder that also features 1080i upconversion via HDMI output.

I was looking at this dvd player http://www.bestbuy.com/site/olspage.jsp ... 4155971229

How much better will the quality on my plasma be if I used HDMI compared to using component cables? A majority of my dvds are bollywood movies so will it really make a difference?

I also came across a dvd recorder that claimed it recorded in 480p. Is that the same with all progressive scan dvd recorders?

Will the HDMI up conversion have any affect on quality if I am playing a divx/xvid file?

Any recommendations/suggestions?

Get an OPPO upconverting player--they can't be beat. I used to hate watching DVDs and homemeade DivX/XviD DVD-RWs because the 480p picture quality was so poor compared to the HD signal on my Panny plasma. However, with the OPPO 971HD connected with HDMI, there's a significant improvement when I set the upconversion to 720p or 1080i.
