I just realized, while Khamosh Pani is a great film, It's completely a Pakistani film than an Indian one.

Whoa. DC, Matrabhoomi must have been pretty mind-blowing if it supplanted Dil Chahta Hai as #1. I know how much you love the Akhtar film, so this is pretty huge.

I don't know why I haven't watched it yet - and I own it too! Shame on me.

My list requires major revisions (to include Omkara and Umrao Jaan for one thing.) I don't know why I have SLB's Devdas on there. In fact, I'm pretty sure I dislike the film.

Gosh! I'll soon need to update this list, it'll definitely need some revision, since 2006 was indeed an extraordinary year for Hindi cinema.

I've seen Matrabhoomi about 3 times now, which is more than one could imagine, since it is a film quite difficult to sit through. Ultimately, I've realized that director Manish Jha has done something incredible here, this film is an exercise of pure cinema, or in Bazin's words, "total cinema". Matrabhoomi employes a great example of this whereby the film itself is indistinguishable from reality (although, it's something that will never actually be reality, no matter how convincing it is). In Bazin's eyes, he thought that cinema could reconnect humanity to nature, away from the disappointments of science. An idealist theory for Bazin who also considered cinema as something much bigger than itself, and essentially that's what Matrabhoomi attempts to do/or is. Matrabhoomi's central conflict centers around the fear of our inevitable demise - and the desire to perserve not only our interets and conceits, but our physical bodies. The photographic image of what we see onscreen is the exact duplicate of ourselves, and through "total cinema," it can reprodouce our being in the most complex and "real" form.

Sound great, I dismissed this film because it looked like nothing but negativity towards India and I usually don't like those films, thinking they are pandering to western audiences and re-inforcing stereotypes about India and it's many social problems. But I haven't seen it so I can't really say. You're description certainly makes it look interesting.

I despise my list, and will definitely give it an overhaul once I've caught up on all the glaring oversights on my part (still haven't seen A LOT.)

Devdas and Water definitely do not belong on it.

Most definately, Devdas and Water don't belong there. I'm pretty sure most would now put Black Friday in there if they were to re-edit their lists.

Great list, I found some really good movies from the list.

FYI, No list is complete without the Malayalam film THANMATHRA. A great movie and a great performance from MOHAN LAL that put Bachans role in Black to shame. DVD IS OUT and it has subtitles, BUY THE DVD, no DVD collection is complete without this great film.

Dear Mr. Kuttapan,
What do u wanna prove by saying 'It puts Bachchan's Black to Shame'. Are you comparing the movie or the actors. In any way both the movie and Actors belong to different Genre.
One belong to 'Art cinema' and other to more of 'Commercial' one.

While as far as the Actor's are concerned both are great in there own respective fields.

No other actor can ever be able to perform so brilliantly as Bachchan did in Don, Deewar and yes in Black.

So stop whinning about Bachchan and use some other actor for comparison.

and Yes I am a big fan of Mr. Amitabh Bachchan.

:) which one is Art and which one is Commercial? Both films were no commecial films but Thanmathra turned out to be a big hit because of the fact Keralas favorite prince was acting like a god. One was a copy of an english film and even the moves, expressions, and body laungages were copied and other wasn't. Both actors played alzheimers patients and one turned out to be a mix of parkinsons and alzheimers.

I do like Amithab Bachan but I don't think he can be compared to any great actors in the world.

3 films were released that year with Alzheimers playing and important role for the main actors 1) BLACK, 2) Thanmathra, 3) Meine Gandhi Ko Nahi Maara, so it is very easy to compare their expressions and talents. Big b could'nt come close to what Anupam Kher and Mohan lal did in their roles. Also AB was given the National award by the Jury chairman and he forced other jury members to give the award to AB. Now the Delhi High Court is getting involved and got a stay order again for the 2006 national awards.

Again, I really do like AB eventhough I don't think that he is a great actor. He has an amazing screen presense which many great actors lack.

I had some free time on my hand, so I ultimately decided to updated the old top 20. It includes a new #1 and a few exclusions from the old while some new additions as well.
