Plot Summary for
Partition (2007)

A love story played out against a backdrop of political and religious upheaval. At the end of the Second World War, 38 year-old career soldier Gian Singh resigns his commission with the British Indian Army and returns to his childhood village, near the border with Pakistan. Haunted by the memories of war, he seeks a quiet life of farming, solitude and prayer. His peace is shattered in August 1947, however, when India is granted independence. A new border is drawn between Hindu-dominated India and Muslim-dominated Pakistan, and the region is torn apart by massacres fueled by ancient animosities. In the midst of one such massacre, Gian finds Naseem, a 17-year-old Muslim girl, and takes her under his protection. They gradually find themselves drawn to each other but, as their remarkable story plays out, the obstacles to their happiness prove all but insurmountable.

This may be good, but I'm not too excited because it seems whenever the west want to show India it's always about poverty or religious tension. However I'm sure they will do a better job than the crap bollywood (and lollywood) has come out with. But why oh why did they have Kristin Kreuk playing the role of the muslim girl? Were there no Indian/Pakistani girls who could have done so and I may say a better job? Don't get me wrong she is OK as an actress and cute, but she's half-white half-chinese and I think it's unfair on actors from south asian backgrounds who didn't even get the chance. I expected better from an Indian-born director.
Also Jimi Mistry is half-Indian but playing a full Indian. What's wrong with getting actors from similar backgrounds to play the roles?
You don't see fair skinned Indian girls in the west playing white girls do you?

But looking at the pics on IMDB, they do look quite convincing in their roles.

The film is running in the art circuit. This week it's in Ottawa and may be other places too. The film and interviews have been covered widely in the media. As I read/ seen in interviews:
The maker/ director is 'last name' Sarin. He made this film from what he himself witnessed. As I can see it from its storyline, it's basically Gadar type film. But, made for Western audiences. He did not want to portray India/ Pakistan seperation but an 'India Pakistan Type' mass migration, termoil/ separation and that's why non-Indian actors.

All this as I recall from publicity material/ interviews.

Hopefully, I'll catch this film in a day or two.
