At 30, Hooda turns naughty
By: Subhash K Jha

On August 20, Randeep Hooda had an unexpected birthday gift. Thousands of prisoners of the Thane Central Jail sang ‘Happy Birthday’ to him. The actor was shooting at the venue for his forthcoming film Risk.

Says Hooda, “It was very touching. I can’t think of a better gift… unless Angelina Jolie popped out of a cake. Jokes aside, I was deeply moved. My director Vishram Sawant and I were shooting the end-portions of Risk in the prison. When they got to know it was my birthday, they all sang for me. I don’t know of anyone else who has got this gift. Ain’t I a lucky sod?”

Vinod Khanna turns baddie

By: Sandipan Dalal
November 2, 2006

It looks like Amitabh Bachchan, aka Ram Gopal Varma’s Gabbar Singh, has competition from Vinod Khanna. The yesteryear actor now makes a comeback as an underworld don in Vishram Sawant’s Risk. This don has no moll or trademark statements. In a freewheeling chat, Khanna talks about his comeback and production plans.

Why the sudden comeback to films?

It was early this year when I decided to get back to films. I have never really considered politics as a career. It has been more like social service. Also, I have exhausted my savings. Apart from my house here, I run two households in Delhi and Punjab. I have to take care of the education and other needs of my children for which I need to start earning again. So now, I’m back to doing what I know best. Risk is going to be my comeback film.

Are you tired of being a Member of Parliament?

When I was a minister and held a portfolio in the previous government, I wasn’t allowed to take up an independent career as laid down by the Constitution of India. But now that I’m a MP, I can practice another profession. Also, this is my third tenure in my constituency and I have addressed all the major infrastructure-related issues. So I can concentrate on films.

How did Risk happen?

Interestingly, my youngest son, who is 15 years old, happened to get hold of a DVD of the film D and insisted that I watch it. A week later, I got a call from Vishram Sawant’s (D’s director) office. He came home and gives me a narration. At that time I hadn’t seen D so I asked Vishram about the films he has done in the past. He said D and it immediately struck me that he’s the same guy my son had told me about.

Why did you choose to play a villain?

Every other actor wants to play a negative character on celluloid these days. Even I wanted to do something striking and different. However, I have not indulged in any special styling for my character. I play a baddie who is compassionate yet vicious.

Who is your fave villain?

Pran saab is my all-time favourite villain. Apart from him, I loved Eli Wallach in Sergio Leone’s The Good, The Bad and The Ugly.

"It’s not the typical ‘chor-police’ play"
Joginder Tuteja, IndiaGlitz [Saturday, November 04, 2006]

T.A. Shah presents, K Sera Sera Production’s “RISK”. Written and directed by VISHRAM SAWANT of “D” Fame, the film is set to hit the theatres this December. This thriller with the family backdrop stars Randeep Hooda as Suryakant, Vinod Khanna as Khalid and Tanushree Dutta as Shradha in the lead roles. It also stars Seema Biswas, Makrand Deshpandey and Yashpal Sharma is supporting roles.

Director Vishram Sawant, speaking on Risk expressed, “Its not the typical ‘chor-police’ play, but brings forward the serious aspect of a cops life - ‘duty’. A strong willed, dedicated cop, whose priority is his duty and at any cost. This movie is the other side of the story, an honest cop standing of a crossroad of a dilemma to take a risk. His job itself is a tough risk and doing it honestly a tougher job. It’s a movie with a very strong character and hard-hitting story, which conveys a message and not the motives.”

“Risk salutes the courage of those honest officers who are strangled in this system and still doing their duty in true sense not for the name or fame. It’s about dedication for your work & courage of doing something right,” added Mr. Sawant.

“The movie Risk is a movie with conviction, based on other side of cops’ life, directed by Vishram. Vishram as a person is very creative and catches the sensitivity of the subject. Our association has been quite long and fruitful. We have full conviction in Risk, this movie is surely going to hit hard and is a food for thought. This thought provoking feature will surely be appreciated widely. It breaks away from the stereotypical and with this season of meaningful cinema hitting screens this one will surely leave a mark,” asserts Producer Mr. Parag Sanghvi, K Sera Sera.

Akbar Sami is making his debut as music director with this film. Background score has been contributed by Sandesh Shandiliya, Choreography by Ganesh Acharaya. Cinematography is by Muttuswami and Vivek Shah is on the Editors credit.

So this movie takes forward the trend of meaningful movies with social messages marking an entry into the world of cinema.

About Vishram Sawant

From Photography, Advertising, designing interiors to filmmaking, director Vishram Sawant, of ‘D’ Fame, now brings RISK starring Randeep Hooda under the Banner of K Sere Sera films. ‘D’, starring Randeep Hooda again, was Vishram’s debut film, which won many accolades. “One can put emotions, movement, visuals, everything into cinema. That’s why it is more interesting”, believes Vishram.

About K Sera Sera productions

As a reputed Film Production company, K Sera Sera Productions has always surged towards unleashing the latent creative talents lying in the brighter future prospect of the industry. Right from the beginning, the endeavor has reaped overwhelming success and has been genuinely successful in sculpting a signature creative genre for itself.

Experimental sensibility is a rare commodity and we are proud to say that the exclusive eye to forms & details has been an integral part of us. With renowned blockbusters like Sarkar, starring Amitabh Bachchan and Abhishek Bachchan, Darna Mana Hai, Ek Hasina thi and Ab Tak Chappan. K Sera Sera is surely looking forward to more such hits in near future.

Looks promising. yeah. vinod khanna is not much of an actor unlike his son.

I couldn't recognize Randeep Hooda in the poster(It is him right?). The rest of the cast looks great, seema biswas, yashpal sharma,...

This looks quite good and I quite liked D. This Randeep looks rather different from Monsoon Wedding. Vinod Khanna was good in his early days, but was never recognised as other stars.

jha slams the film, but praises the randeep performance. whatever you do, do not read the t adarsh review(major spoilers in that!). still plan on catching this soon, anyone seen this yet?...

Subhash K Jha - Too much of a Risk

Randeep Hooda's scowl steels the show. And I do mean steel. There's a bedrock of hardened cynicism in the way Hooda portrays the 'encounter specialist' Suryakant Satam who outwardly seems so stoic, you wonder if he feels anything beyond the shrill call of duty.

But….knock knock! ….Underneath the imperturbable exterior is a heart that beats, bleeds and even bleats.

"Can I give you a hug?" after a gruesome encounter he tells his girlfriend, an indeterminate shadowy figure that heaves her bosom and makes endless cups of coffee for the man in her life.

If you've seen Jaya Bhaduri in Zanjeer and Parveen Babi in Deewaar, you'd know what the woman in the angry young man's life is meant to do. And be.

Dutta doesn't do it too well. The glamour she's supposed to bring into this ruthless film about an ongoing flow of scummy blood on the unforgiving streets of Mumbai and Bangkok simply gets washed away in the flow of clichés, albeit authentic clichés but done to hammering death nevertheless.

There's a whole battalion of baddies in this poor show of muscle power, all played by actors borrowed from Ram Gopal Verma's factory. They indulge in the most horrific violence with stomach-churning nonchalance. All in a daze work.
Could we please send them to a forwarding address, preferably to a place where no one can bring them back?

The question one would like to ask director Vishram Sawant is who wants to watch another cops-and-gangster film after Verma has done it to ruinous death in films as far-ranging as Ab Tak Chappan and Shiva? Who cares if the law-enforcing hero is an idealist beyond any rationale? Who cares if he gets suspended because he does his job too well?

We've seen every actor from Amitabh Bachchan to Manoj Bajpai to, ahem ahem, Mohit Ahlawat go through the grueling ordeal by idealism. There're too many gangsters, politicians and other undesirables, including the impregnable Seema Biswas as a smooth-talking don-politician with visibly saffron leanings. There's nothing to be said about yet another grisly homage to gangsterism. Except Hooda who puts in a finely-tuned bridled performance.

It's good to see Vinod Khanna return from exile. As the chief antagonist his wizened features exude an inner strength in spite of an under-written part. Wish there was more of him and less of the scummy brigade with torn off limbs and ripped-open morals. We know the world has gone to the dogs. But cinema about street violence needs to have more bite than this barking babel on high-profile goondaism with a background score by Sandesh Shandilya that sounds like a clutter of calamitous elements strewn into a sense of impending catastrophe. Mahesh Muthuswamy's camera tries to pick out interesting elements in this simmering cauldron of clichés.

Watch this goon-gang only for Randeep Hooda's clenched performance.
