Lata Mangeshkar releases music of Umrao Jaan

Was J P Dutta’s inviting Lata Mangeshkar to release the music of his Umrao Jaan a stint to get over the Asha Bhosle effect from his film? Lyricist Javed Akhtar was given the task of inviting her to the function as it is said that she never refuses him. Both of them share a warm camaraderie with each other. Eventually she turned up for the function.

Inside source informs, "Asking Lata Mangeshkar to release the music of the film was an ingenuous way to break the aura of Asha Bhonsle that surrounds the earlier Umrao Jaan. J P Dutta is absolutely fed up of the comparisons with the Muzzafar Ali’s film. People are constantly comparing the two. He wanted the comparisons to stop. And what better place to begin with, than the music? J P saw Lata as their saving grace, whose presence at the music function could deflect attention from the National award-winning mujras that Ashaji sang for Rekha in the earlier film. J P hopes the desired effect has been achieved, and music lovers will now look at this Umrao Jaan in a different light. He hopes that now Anu Malik-Alka Yagnik's combined efforts in J P's Umrao Jaan acquired a profile very different from the Khayyam-Asha Bhosle combination in Muzzafar Ali's Umrao Jaan.”

I think that Alka Yagnik will not be able to do justice to the songs-Even at her age Asha Bhosle would do a splendid rendition of Umrao--

alka has been lying low lately, and bit out of form, but she is capable though, if not better than asha!

but to surpass khyam, asha, rekha, muzzafar ali, shahryaar, is not only monumental but impossible!!imho

Aish vaish do not stand a chance, here and there!

but I am glad, dutta once forever used his right common sense to create fresh compositions, not to recycle and butcher classic compositions, score!

Dutta has best track record of working successfuly with annu malik and Javed akhtar, and they will be possibly able to pull a good one again..I hope

As long as it is not a rehashed and butchered Don, kinda soundtrack, with its individual identity, I am happy!

It is ironical that Don will go in the annals :nopity: :bangbang: as the one of most successful soundtrack by SEL, and RDB as best work by rehman! :(

Yes, I like it. On repeated listenings, it sounds even better. Anu Malik has always done well with J P Dutta, and Umrao Jaan is no exception.

Again I must thank Jeet for the link he has aprovided.
Hopefully this song will make up for any shortfalls of the other renditions.

My pleasure. Now here's hoping the film will be good as well.

I haven't heard the music yet, but if any one had doubt whether Aish will do justice to Rekha's role, I ask looking at the beauty, KOI SHAQUE (Any doubt) ??

Moreover, Aish beauty in this pic totally blows away Rekha's stills in Umrao Jaan. Unbelievable.

I have heard it through! Believe me I was not expecting anu can pull it to even this extent . He did try to insert some good arrangements too, here and there. Lyrics of Javed do not match up to Shehryaar imho eother!

If you give Orig 10/10, then Anu's effort is though commendable is worth a hefty 8/10 only!!

This kinda soundtrack has some restrictions as almost all numbers are mujras not simple ghazals so, instrumentations, arrangements have to be faithful to that sinf of music. So as did Devdas was! but every thing is not Devdas and Devdas had some liberties, while story of Umrao was sad, depressing. Music could have been better but what can you expect from Anu, ? more I think he did the best to his capacity in modern day age .
