After collecting over $2.3 million in the UK, over $1.4 million in Italy and over $1 million in Australia, MONSOON WEDDING looks all set to break all records for an Indian film in North America. My guess is Monsoon Wedding shall easily go on to collect over $3 million in the US alone and therefore it is well on it's way to becoming the highest grossing Indian film of all time, Sholay, Hum Aapke Hain Kaun, Dilwale Dulhaniya Le Jayenge, K3G included.

Here in Toronto, the film started on 3 screens, and now has expanded to six.

I saw the film at the advance screening, a day before the release, so I'm not sure how the film is doing in terms of moviegoers.

But I think it is doing well because of the expansion

In it's 4th weekend of release in the US, 'Monsoon Wedding' jumped up into the top 20, as it collected another $774,150 from 99 screens with a very good average of $7899 per screen. The total US collections of 'Monsoon Wedding' now stand at $2,208,687 well on its way to a total collection of $3 million plus in the US as per my prediction and therefore it will most certainly become the highest grossing Indian film in the US and Overseas and also most probably Worldwide including India.

'Monsoon Wedding' grossed $746,693 from 128 theaters for a $5,834 average. Mira Nair's award-winning film added 30 more theaters and watched it jump up another 2 spots to No. 18 on the US Box Office, while its cume climbed to $3.3M after its fifth weekend. 'Monsoon Wedding' has now become the all time highest grossing Indian film in the US. Based on it's performance so far 'Monsoon Wedding' looks all set to gross over $5 million in the US if not more.

I have always felt and stated that 'Monsoon Wedding' stood a much better chance than 'Lagaan' at winning the Best Foreign Film Oscar. I know a lot of you feel otherwise, but the fact is you all probably also realize the truth in this.

Time for the weekly Box Office update of 'MONSOON WEDDING'.
The film continues to do well in its sixth weekend of release, with its collections actually inching up 6% over the previous weekend. The award-winning film grossed $793,698 with a still very strong average of $5,669 from 140 theaters. The Mira Nair film has now upped its cume to $4,315,138 and it would be safe to predict that it should end up collecting no less than $6 million in the US. The film already is the highest grossing Indian film in the US and Overseas and it may well be on it's way to becoming the highest grossing Indian film worldwide (including India).

In it's 7th weekend of release, 'Monsoon Wedding' continued it's record run at the US Box Office. The film grossed another $710,136, down only 11% over the previous weekend, the smallest percentage drop for any film in the Top 20. Now showing on 150 screens the film averaged $4,734 per screen, which is still the fourth highest average in the Top 20. With the total gross for the film now at $5,323,061, the film continues to outdo my predictions of its final cume and now looks all set to do atleast around $7 million in the US, if not more. The worldwide collections now stand close to $14 million and should end up around $17 - $18 million which would make it the highest grossing Indian film worldwide.

Just saw it here in Memphis. Wonderful movie. Definitely should have been the first choice for the Oscars. I was kind of sad that the theater I went to was practically empty. This movie needs more publicity.

I don'nt think it would have won the Oscars as the winner was nominated with a political decision.

hey guys. Bash me all you want, but I feel that Lagaan needed the more publicity created by the Oscars than Monsoon Wedding.

While both are good films, Lagaan is a well-made BOLLYWOOD film, while Monsoon Wedding is a well-made ART-HOUSE flick. There are already plenty of arthouse films (such as Terrorist, Such a Long Journey, even East is East etc.) getting recognition here in the west but Bollywood isn't getting ANY recognition. Say what you want about the Bombay film industry, but wouldn't any Indian film fan be proud to see Aamir Khan, AB, SRK, etc. up there on a quality MAINSTREAM theatre, with WESTERN people in the audience??!!

Lagaan managed to accomplish what Asoka couldn't - get the attention of the western people. Now with the help of this Oscar nom, and the supposed release of Kaante, the western people will finally be exposed to some of the creative people from Bombay.

They might not get it at once, but there is just a little hope that one day, our favourite stars will be known by more people than just the South Asian community.
