He is getting dissed way too much more than he deserves!

Lets look at his flicks,

Aatish, great music by Nadeem Shrawan,
Ace acting by Aditya Panscholi as Nawab and Sanju Baba as Baba, techincally the movie kicked ass!! The movie in my opinion is a pretty cool gangster flick, yeah its a remake of for a better tomorrow and a state of grace! But you cant call Aatish a bad movie!

Ram Shastra, remake os Steven Segal flick I think, pretty crap, but again technically neat, first Indian flick to use Dolby sound, the movie wasnt completed by Sanajy Gupta, so all the fault doesnt lie at his door.

Hameshaa, I aint seen it but most ppl who have say its an underated neat flick. With ace acting by Panscholi.

Khauff, much delayed, long in the making, many problems between eth producer and director. INMHO it was better than teh juror which it was remake of, Manisha acted and looked pathetic in it, Sanju Baba was menacing and a neat performance and role. The movie had good action a thumping background score, good music, it had a bunch of really neat scenes, but the movie as a whole could have been much better, but still it wasnt really a bad movie. Technically good.

Jung, remake of desperate measures, again better than the original, more bearable atleast, good acting, good action and background score, it was apparent the movie was incomplete, Sanjay Gupta and Sanjay Dutt left the movie because the producer wasnt willing to complet it properly. The movie was just about average. But if it had been completed in teh proper manner, I think it woudl have been decent.

So yeah he has made some not so good movies, but Aatish was cool and Hameshah is underated.

I think the problem thus far is he has only made remakes apart from Hameshah. The movies he has chosen to remake have been poor, like the Juror and Desperate Measures why remake Hollywood bad movies which were also flops. How could anyone possibly remake a crappy movie into a neat one??

But with Kaante, he is remaking, Reservoir Dogs, a classic and his writer is the writer of Satya, Shool, Paanch, Mission Kashmir, Kaun, Anuraag Kayshap.

Ok this my take on Sanjay Gupta.

Ignore the resemblance or inspiration from A Better Tomorrow and Aatish was a great flick to watch. Not seen Ram Shastra or Hameshaa.

But you can see why Sanjay Gupta gets cussed so much from the choice of his next two films; Khauff and Jung – remakes of The Juror and Desperate Measures – hardly earth shattering movies in the first place which begs the question why would anybody want to remake them ??? I guess a person who chooses to waste time on doing re-makes of b-grade films deserves all the criticism he gets. But still I know many who actually liked Jung and Khauff, technically the films were good and your comments are fair on these two.

Having said that, he’s picked one hell of a top flick to remake in Kaante. Maybe his choice of Hollywood films reflect the outcome too – so me hopes.

Ram Shastra was NOT the first Hindi film to be in Dolby - though it claims it on some of its posters (due to unprofessionalism in the industry)

The first film in Dolby Stereo (A) was 1942-A Love Story which has a much more subtle and refined use of the technology anyway.

Jung was unbearable - definitely not average! It was technically bad - apart from a handful of inspired shots which were done by Sanjay Gupta. I don't think he shot most of it. I don't understand how anyone can call Jung technically good - are we talking about the same film here? Technically good in my dictionary refers to stuff like 1942 A Love Story, Mission Kasmir, Dil Se, Lagaan. Even stuff like Dil Chahta Hai, Josh, HDDCS, K3G are miles ahead of anything Gupta has ever made. Take no credit away for his trailer of Kaante - but Gupta has so far been a B-movie director at best.

You are absolutely right on both fronts. 1942 - A Love Story is the first Indian movie to be released with Dolby Stereo.

I second your opinion on Sanjay Gupta. He is definately no better than a B grade director so far, who happens to have been fortunate to have even survived as long as he has. But then again we all know it is not your competence or success that determines whether you survive in Bollywood or not. But rather the friends and relationships you have within the industry.

i wont lie to u... i havent seen any of sanjay guptas movie other than Jung and Khauff.. and i thought these movies were bearable.. well prefering Khauff over Jung... And ure right their maj about Sanju baba having a wicked role in Khauff ... i thought it was excellent...

"Babu mujhe pyar se Nahin, Khauff Se Bhulaate Hai!!"

Might have to pull aatish out and watch that..!! :)

I am sure Kaante shud not be judged by Sanjay Guptas past.. im sure his career is about to restart with the White feather pictures!!

I rather wait for Kaante before making any comments on Sanjay Gupta based only on a trailer that was shot, recorded, edited and processed by the very qualified people from Hollywood. Like Aryan said waiting for SG to screw it up...of course I have my fingers crossed  Oh yeah by the way anyone remembers Sanjay F Gupta who shot that cool song Kambakht Ishq from Pyaar Tune Kya Kiya. Well he's directing Ram Gopal Varma's next untitled film.
