It didn't sound any better than the 5.1 track to me. :|

Umm...I don't know, but, to me, it actually looks better than Yash Raj Films's sub-mediocre release. That said, it has, indeed, been a while since I saw the YRF DVD.

The movie was originally mixed and released in Dolby SR only therefore the only way to get a true 5.1 mix would be to go back and remix the entire film from the original sounds stems, which I seriously doubt the Chopras have even saved. Can you imagine G.P. Sippy/Ramesh Sippy never even bothered to save one decent print of Sholay let alone the original negatives. Indians are in my opinion the most short sighted people in the world. There is absolutely no concept of looking ahead and planning accordingly.

Out of curiosity, does anyone still have the old Prism bootleg of DDLJ to provide some comparison screenshots with?

WOW nice comparison Stephen, love the new site. It's unbelievable it's 2007 and era of DVDs is getting ready to be replaced by HD versions yet Indian DVDs are being compared to VCDs and in certain cases beating the DVD counterparts.

From that site (http://www.bollywoodondvd.com/comparisons/ddlj.htm), France's DVD release looks to have nice sharpness, while Germany's DVD's colors are nicely saturated. Though both are mediocre, Yash Raj's poor excuse of a release is certainly put to shame by either.

Looks can be deceiving. The French DVD is simply an NTSC-to-PAL conversion of the Yash Raj video - in motion, it looks much worse than the YRF DVD. The extra sharpness is just down to some cheap edge enhancement.

Thats a really really really EXCELLENT analysis Stephen.....I just cant get enough of it. U ll be surprised to know that AMOF I was working on the same topic for the last few days .....getting screenshots of all the dvds that I have of ddlj. But since i didnt have only the REM dvd, i was waiting for ur review so that I could buy it and then post the whole work. But I am extremely happy to find all of it in one place. By far this has been the best DVD comparison of my life..... especially considering the fact that it pertains to the longest running film of Indian Cinema. Bottom Line: Thank U.
