2. The screen... how much shall i spend on one or shall i make my own out of MDF

3. Cabling... where shall i begin.. what do i need etc

4. How much u think its gonna cost

5. Progressive Scan Player.. does my pioneer 545 support this!!

6. Does anyone think im being stupid...!!

Also check forums here;

http://www.avsforum.com/avs-vb/

..search for the projector and there is plenty of info on it.

Answer to 5. No pioneer 545 doesn’t not give progressive output. The newly released Pioneer 747a does - more info here;

Hi Faddy,
Welcome to the big screen club. I have an NEC LT150 and I am using mostly HTPC to connect this little projector although I have a RP56 progressive scan dvd player. I am constant browser at Avsforum, so I can give you some information about the projector(A100E) if you already not checked the site.
One of my friend purchased this projector from Japan as it is not available locally. Paid $1375 from http://www.Pricejapan.com. And he is happy with it, as he tried LT150 and some other projectors before.

And for about $250 you can buy a good progressive scan dvd player.
I am happy with my DIY screen that cost me around $100, although I have a Da_Lite model B pull down screen.
So for about $2000 you are set for a ride of your life. Remember there is no going back!

ok bought a sharp projector a few years ago in the uk cant remember the model but it was about 1500 at the time, no doubt half that by now!

its really good, i project it onto a white painted wall and its fine. bought various speakers etc with it. regarding the projector though, problems are its not widescreen, but a projection size of 15 across that doesnt worry me too much seing black bars, it can be very noisey in a small room when watching a non action film, the picture is a little dark compared to tv - try watching eastenders and you know what i mean, its totally useless durring the day unless you pull the curtains.

on the plus side, cricket players are life size, the picture with a good dvd rocks, playstation is fantastic on the screen, even a crap movie is far more enjoyable with a screen that big! Resolution on video isnt that good, when the picture is that large you notice the pixels, however stick a dvd in and the picture resolution is top notch cinema quality. :keh:

regarding cabling depends on if you get the 3 colour rgb outs, if you go for the digital then the shorter the lead the better i was told, short leads are about 0.5 m which means your dvd has to be near the player, my pprojecter sits on a shelf near the celling which means my player has to be high up too, its a pain changing discs like that but what can ya do! cabline is like 15 a 0.5m so measure before you buy!

Interesting stuff. Question for people who use projectors - do you use them as replacement for your TV too or are they still for limited time movie/events watching only? Are they robust enough to be used for very long period of time – I mean TVs get switched on as soon as you wake up :where: and then they go off only when you go to sleep :gob: and unless these new projectors are very well made I don’t think they will last very long for extended period of uses – or is wrong assumption to make with these new breed?

after doing my research (actually quite amazing how much research i have done on this shit.. pity i dont spend the same amount of time doing research on my uni work) it seems projectors have a lamplife of 1,000 hours... which isnt too long if u think about it..!! its about 333 bollywood flicks!! if i watched my whole collection once the lamp wud be bust... i think a projector can only be used when u really have to..!! saying that majority of people who can afford top notch setups tend to have both plasma screens and projector...! maan us lot here are way out of the league... i think we havent even sniffed the premiership league of setups compared to some setups ive seen :cry: check this one out then, it takes the piss.. if i started doing anything like this in my house, my dad wud throw a fit!!

Also...are there different grades of screens? Do I have to look for a specific type of screen for a specific projector. Or can I use a homemade one first??!! :oh:

its all about the lumens

you cant really use a projector durring the day, unless you have a top notch one which is very bright (big lumens!) cos the day light ruins the picture, also people keep walking past the picture.

I only watch movies or PS2 on mine, cos its hooked up to speakers and stuff, you dont really want to watch normal tv with big sound or big picture anyway.

1000 hours sounds right, but you can replace the bulb. They projectors normally cant run for long periods anyway, after several hours the internal fan goes mental switching on and off anyway.

yeah there are different grades of screen, if you got a decent projector then want the biggest image possible you will find that to buy a screen that big will be a few hundred pounds and probably not worth it. Try painting your wall white in high reflective white paint and it is just as good. Thats what i did upon advice from a screen shop guy.

oh and do buy the official speaker wall mounts, i bought some base cubes but didnt at first cos in the uk the brackets were like 45 each, in the states they were cheap. Wow what a difference they made, the sounds was twice as nice.

Most of the people use projectors only to watch DVD movies as most of them need totally dark room like theaters however bright there are.
These are not a substitute to the regular TV, as cable TV signal looks horrible when you magnify with out external scalar and/or line doubler.
And most of the projector bulbs need to be replaced after 1000 or 2000 hours except some projector bulbs which has life span of 6000 hours (example Davis DLP).
I spent around $6000 on my setup and tweaked enough by using HTPC to get a 92-inch wide picture that looks better than my 32-inch interlaced tv image.
These new projectors including Pan A100E gives good picture (at least 80% of the quality) for less money compared to a $30,000 projector.
