Hopefully this'll be better than the German release from REM. They used the same PAL transfer that UTV had for their PAL-to-NTSC DVD, but REM tampered with it, reprocessing it and cranked up the contrast and brightness for no reason and ruined the sharpness. Very frustrating, as the UTV DVD would have been excellent had it not been transfered to NTSC. :?

I believe full bitrate DTS is 1509 kb/s and half bitrate is 768 kb/s, or thereabouts.

is DD5.1 less than half rate DTS?

for MOST films, I can't tell the difference anyway since the original mixing sucks. Although for Swades it would most likely make a difference.

DD 5.1 on DVD is usually either 384 kb/s or 448 kb/s.

Swades
India, 2004

In hindi, swades means our people. India counts more of a billion inhabitants. A colossal manpower able to create the biggest wealths. And nevertheless, the reality of the country is all other. Peasants and their families die hunger in the countries. Their children are not sent to school. Classes divide the inhabitants of a same region. And in the towns, the cuts continuous electricities render impossible to study, to work, to live normally. Swades is the one of the rare films of Bollywood to show the true face of India.

Hindi
16/9 anamorphique (compatible 4/3)

FILM...8/10

Last realization of Ashutosh Gowariker, Swades, following the example of his first world-wide success Lagaan, is the narrative of a fight of which the essential issue unfolds itself in a picturesque town of India. What this be the independence desire facing the occupying English in Lagaan, or here the will to free itself weight of classes and of the under development, this around of a charismatic personage, interpreted in this case by the excellent Shah Rukh Khan that will crystallize all the energies and the will to do to budge the things.

In his role of NRI (non-Returning Indians) emigrerd to the USA and working for the NASA, returning in India to recover his wet nurse and discovering the life of villager to the ancestral mœurs, Shah Rukh Khan reveals touching itself and temperate (well far mill to words that it was in New York Masala). So strong logically, Gowariker exploits the seductive side of his principal actor, it knows also and especially to allow for him to do to pass the manner emotion rather subtle. While making use of the recreation (the movie meeting) and collective implication (the construction of the barrier), the actor arrives thus to do us to believe his personage of « revolutionary » peaceful, that will overturn the order erected by classes, all while remaining respectful of the mother Fatherland (Mother India).

While meeting a casting of second roles attaching, with in first place Daya Shankar Pandey (already seen in Lagaan) in avid postal worker of wrestling and Daya Shankar Pandey, that tries to associate Shah Rukh Khan to its commerce projects in America, Ashutosh Gowariker succeeds in transcend the side « side-kicks » comical of their apparitions for some to do finally of true revealing ones on the life of his country. As an Indian film would not know to exist really without a love history annoyed, the sentimental issue here incarnate by Gayatri Joshi (in his first movie role) in teacher applied and deeply attached to his earth, and worthy beauty of a goddess as alone the Indian movie can some to generate. If the actress does not arrive to express the manner sensualité also convincing as an Aishwarya Rai or a Rani Mukherjee, limited it true by a role more some kept and in sévérité, far habitual canons of the exuberant bomb of Bollywood, the couple all some shades than she composes with Shah Rukh Khan remains one of the essential motors of the intrigue. This that is worth us some good comedy moments without heaviness no, to the picture of the request scene of marriage.

Just as the some penknife blows that are addressed to a corporation where exist again poverty and the illettrisme, not are at all handicapping to follow with interest the intimate odyssey of a man some taken with the realities of a world that it did not know anymore. Can be does it lack some danced ones well removed numbers (the musical pieces, excellents to the abode, are nonetheless present) and a lack of surprises at the level of the scenario for that Swades succeeds taking the adhesion to 100%. To this title, one would have exchanged without no hesitation a dance sequence visually also époustouflante as the one of Lagaan against the profusion of turned scenes within the NASA that do not bring nothing to the intrigue and that big do to think about an advertising form made up.

By his trains direct as well as his theme rather atypical, to know more a description of the harmful role of the classes than the intense excitement of patriotism, Swades is the worthy representative of an Indian movie in constant evolution. The all served one wonderfully by the game of his principal actor, that was worth for him while passing the award of the Better Actor in 2004, furious fact to think about these icons of the movie campaigning Communist Russia, but with the humor point and of emotion what's more.

INTERACTIVE.....5/10

By Laurent Pécha.

Of emblé, one is under the charm of the superb packaging proposed by Bodega: a sumptuous digipack that groups together the two DVD separated by a booklet, complete reproduction of the press file of the film. To the view of the imposing length of 190 minutes of Swades, Bollywood obliges, and the presence of a glutton track DTS, the editor had the wisdom to cut the film on two discs with a result more more more than happier on the picture (to see lower). Damage on the other hand that the continuation of the film does not set in motion directly to the insertion of the DVD 2 and that it be necessary to go through the menu.

On the first DVD to the welcome menu temperately animated but completely elegant as the other menus (set up), one finds two bonus. First of all, l'accesses to all the songs of the film and this even if they figure normally on the disc 2 (it is not a matter therefore not simply to attain the film through to a based chapitrage on the thematic songs). Backs of the gives an award to, the songs are proposed only in stereo PCM. The other bonus is constituted of a series of bands announce and teasers of the film.

The second disc, to identical dressing at the level of the menus, offer the possibility to view four supplements. First of all, cut scenes (5 for a length of 8MIN 18S, VOSTF) worthy of interest. One nevertheless would have appreciated to have explanations on these cuttings and especially of the news (presentation texts) to replace the sequences in the context of the narrative. One has equally the right to another unpublished scene in the presence of a very beautiful song (10MIN 14S) that really would have deserved another goes out that his collection of the final mounting.

The two last bonus are on the other hand less fascinating. One can discover a bêtisier (7MIN 49S) less regulated rhythmically that those that one is used to discover (it is necessary often to await long seconds before having the right to the « plantage » actor) and a very, very video long (23MIN 14S) on the repetitions of the actors. Interesting initially, this supplement becomes quickly forbidding and would have deserved to be amputated of a good ten of minutes.

IMAGE ..9/10

The better picture Bollywood seen in DVD. Bodega spoils the movie fans Indian with a transfet anamorphique of all beauty. While choosing for two discs, the editor wins sufficient the whole place to encode the picture in optimum conditions and the result is a visual régal of all the instants. Colors bursting, remarkable definition, particularly contrasts well supported, invisible compression… and cherry on the cake when one knows the difficulty to have clean masters (even for the recent films), practically no major defect on the picture (some rare spots or points here or there but nothing of this that one is used to have on films Bollywood).

SOUND..10/10

Again stronger than the picture, the sound. We not that at the beginning of year and nevertheless the band his of Swades already takes return you to be in our top his year 2006 in next December. If the track VO DD 5.1 already tremendous one, one attained the sonorous nirvana while choosing for the VO DTS. Dynamic to wish, having access to a stereo one before to the phenomenal opening, knowing harmonious to use the rear satellites, mix it DTS captivates us at the time of the musical passages. To such not at all that one has the impression to discover Swades for the first time.

Amazon.fr are taking ages to get this in stock, so I haven't received my copy yet. Looks promising from those screenshots, though - hopefully this is the original PAL master used for UTV's release (and not tampered with, as REM did).
