Shots from one of my favourite films - as expected, the DVD is awful. But it does have subtitles in English, French, German, Dutch and Portuguese (according to the cover). Which of course compensates for the shit transfer.

*Edit* Original images have disappeared, so further shots posted below.

Anyone seen the Moser Baer version of this? If so, any comments on quality?

Comparison shots between the Madhu DVD (above), and the Shemaroo DVD (below). The Shemaroo is by no means perfect, but a massive improvement on the Madhu disc:

What's the use of the ugly watermark and why do they scram it into their atrocious transfers??

The watermark is completely unnecessary, but why do you think this transfer is 'atrocious'?

I find it atrocious because it is interlaced, colors are ugly (not balanced) and faces are almost greyish. Soft video. PAL to NTSC converted. In other words, not at all DEI like. But much better than Madhu

How many DVDs of old films have you seen that are 'DEI like'? Unfortunately you are using DEI DVDs as a benchmark (and even those were not flawless) - and hence most DVDs will be bad in comparison. As I said in my original post, this DVD is far from perfect, and the watermark is unacceptable, but this is actually a decent DVD for a 20+ year old film.

Agreed that DEi shouldn't be used as a benchmark and they too were not perfect. This DVD may be decent, but since its PAL to NTSC converted, I'd not agree and wouldn't rather stay away.

I'm also not happy with the colors, but I can use my television settings to alter them and render them as required.

Also sharpness is lacking and the gamma, brightness and contrast are not well rendered.

Yes! Respecting the age of the film, its pretty decent. But looking normally, I'm not happy.

And bhaskar, are those subtitles you mentioned actually there in the Madhu edition or it is just mentioned in the cover?
