Except "Khamosh Pani" where they failed, EXCEL have done a fantastic job of DVDs in India... their Hollywood DVDs are as good as those released in the U.S.

Probably because they use the same transfer.

You are right -- Khamosh Pani and Dance Like A Man have both poor transfers, and there may be other non-Hollywood movies on Excel that have poor transfers. However, any Hollywood movie from Excel is simply excellent. BTW, Parieneeta is great too on Excel...

Imp Note - Excel's Hollywood releases are authored in Taiwan... probably that's why they are soooo good!

Quite a few actually, but they are mostly South Indian audiences since Telugu and Tamil DVD's come with standard DTS tracks.

I meant to say hindi movie fans, I would say less than 10% would have a DTS setup!! The hindi movie watcher's moto is to watch the movie the quickest and cheapest way possible. Unfortunately, quality is not important!!

What punjabimunda says was probably true at one time for a section of hindi movie watchers, but things have changed a lot now. People are more conscious and you'll be surprised how many people ask for DTS features when buying medium to high end home theatres. By the way, even a large section of Hollywood movie watchers (including those in the U.S.) would want to see movies the quickest and the cheapest way. So I disagree with the generalisation. Thanks.

I visit 4 desi stores in my area to rent Hindi movies. Each store has told me that over 75% of their customers want the VHS version (converted from DVD) of movies. This is due to the VHS version being cheaper ($2 for DVD and $1 for VHS)and more copies of the VHS version being available.

One store in my area tried to just rent DVDs, their business went down so much that they had to go back to making the VHS copies!!

This is the situation where I am, I guess movie watcher are more discerning in your area. Where I am quality is not that important! To me the ironic thing is that people will send a lot of money on their TVs and than watch VHS versions of movie on their expensive tv!

NewDeep, compare Hindi DVDs to Tamil and Telugu DVDs. The quality of the latter is usually better (though not reference quality), and they have featured DTS for a few years now.

I'd say the number of DTS setups would probably be very close to the number of Dolby Digital setups. The reason quite simply being that all Dolby Digital A/V Recievers/Processors have also had DTS since atleast the last 4-5 yrs.
Although to answer your question more specifically, the appropriate response is another question, "How many Indian movie fans have a DVD player, let alone a Home Theater setup with either DD or DTS?".
