I noticed dual layer DVD-R and DVD+R are now available and offer 240 minutes recording time (therefore, no need to shrink). They are very expensive though!

My question is are they compatible with existing stand alone DVD recorders or computer DVD writers?

I hate recording films on two discs and don't mind buying the expensive dual layer discs, but really don't want to reinvest in new recorders or writers at this stage...

Do let me know your experiences... Thanks :D

dual layer has been out for more then a year, and you have to buy a new dvd recorder if you dont already have a dual layer dvd burner

Thanks Izzy... Your spelling has improved a lot since we last spoke! LOL

I am wondering why the discs are so expensive? DVD-R are as cheap as £0.18 ($0.10) per disc if you buy them in a spindle, the dual layer cost about £30.00 for five...

Okay, I have to buy a new burner for my computer... What about my stand alone Panasonic DVD recorder... I only bought that 3 months ago, but it does not say anything about dual layer discs... Does that mean its not compatible?

I wonder if most people on here are into this dual layer technology, or is it still not fully developed... I mean will the dual layer discs be compatible for playing with existing players?

you wonder why they cost so much?

apparently you don't remember the days when single layer DVD-/+R's costed the same. Dual Layer discs were $10 a pop at one time (I think). drop in single layer discs kept me distracted from expen$ive dual layer discs. but they've come down in price. a good dual layer burner costs < $50USD. it took me 45 mins to burn a 2.4x DL disc that came "free" with the purchase of a 100pcs 16x cake box. but I'm not ready to shell out $2~$3 per disc :P I'd rather buy a new hard drive. got a 120gb HDD for $20 :D more reliable than stupid discs!
