Chandramukhi with Big B?

By Vickey Lalwani ©2005 Bollyvista.com

Amitabh Bachchan
Southern ad maker is planning to make the Hindi version of 'Chandramukhi' with Amitabh Bachchan.

The film originally made in Malayalam as 'Manichithra Tazu' in 1993 and in Kannada as 'Aabta Mitra' in 2003, was turned into a Tamil-Telugu money-spinner in 2004. Aaditya has bought the Hindi rights. Buzz is, he paid a hefty 1 crore for the same.

Aaditya is also planning to make an epic love story called 'Saaz'. 'Saaz' is set during the Goan liberation movement and is the story of a Goan girl and a Portuguese officer. Samir Dattani will play the lead, while the girl is yet to be finalized.

Doesnt matter if its BigB or Rajni or Small B. If they find a good female artist, the movie will will applause. Very good story.

I saw the Rajnikant version, and found the overall film quite enjoyable. Some of the fx was also decent (except fight scenes!). And I don't think I'll ever forget Jothika, whose freakish (yet wonderful) performance, and devilish eyes, managed outshine the highest paid Indian actor in India!

The way the director showed the flashback also was quite fresh. However, the climax looked too rushed and implausible despite the excellent "Raa Raa" song.

If there is a Hindi version, then I will look forward to it as this film has potential to become a blockbuster, if in the right hands…

I saw Chandramukhi not too long ago, and I loved it! It's was by no means the world's greatest film, but it was a pretty enjoyable 3 hours. I agree with your comment DVDUnlimited, the film definitely needs a good heroine in it

BTW, yeh Aaditya kaun hai??????

The plus point of chandramukhi was that it was shot very well and had very good songs. Everything else Manichithrathazhu was a far better movie. Maybe Bollywood can shoot it even better?

no kchan. Bollywood wont make it better. I honestly cant think of any good heroines in Hindi to match the character. I saw the kannada version and there soundarya did a good job, but Jyothika's big eyes were + point. Same thing with shobana. She has a big eyes and you need big eyes for climax.

I was talking about production values. Acting is not bollywood's + point anyway....if its made probably Jos role will go to Rani Mukherji.
Jo was better than I expected...her smile kind of ruined it, but like you said her eyes were good. Shobana didnt need any special effects on the eye though and was much much much more freakier.

Big B to play Rajnikant?

Subhash K Jha | October 04, 2005 15:28 IST

It's arguably the phenomenal hit of Tamil cinema. The new Rajnikanth fantasy Chandramukhi (no relation to the Salman Khan dud of the same name!) has grossed over Rs 70 million across Tamil Nadu and is still rocking.

The film, originally made in Malayalam as Manichithra Tazu (1993) and in Kannada as Aabta Mitra (2003), was turned into a Tamil-Telugu money-spinner in 2004.

The coveted Hindi rights of Chandramukhi have gone to South's well-known ad maker Narren Aditya. A hefty sum -- Rs 10 million -- was exchanged between the producer Appachan who owns copyrights for the original and Hyderabad's production house Creative Commercials before Chandramukhi became Narren Aditya's film in Hindi. Aditya is now stationed in Mumbai to finalise Bollywood's behemoth for the Hindi version.

"It will have to be none other than Amitabh Bachchan," he says, oozing confidence. "No one has the stature and superstardom to carry off a role of such immeasurable fantasy and flamboyance. I don't think I can make the Hindi Chandramukhi unless Bachchan agrees to play the lead," says Aditya, who has so far made foray into ad films only.

"I have two Hindi films on my anvil -- Chandramukhi and an epic love story which I have named Saaz. It is set during the Goan Liberation Movement. It's the story of a Goan boy, Goan girl and a Portuguese officer. Sahara is to produce the film."

Aditya has not decided the rest of the cast. He has found the young actor whom he considers the best bet for the young Goan lover-boy. "The minute I saw Sammir Dattani, I knew his was the face for the lead in Saaz. It's a face that tempts the camera."

While he prepares to shoot the huge-budgeted epic love story, he is frantically finalising Chandramukhi logistics. "I won't rest until Bachchan says yes."

Why is this guy so crazy about casting Big B? As DVDUnlimited said a while ago, it's the heroine's role that matters - anyone could do this role.

Current govt piracy control also helped for not just this, but many movies in TN. Kana Kandaen ran for 100 days, anniyan ran for 100 days.

May be SRK can bring a little more revenue so they can bet on him.

Aishwarya is the only one I can think of who can do this role in hindi effectively.

I think Urmilla will be excellent in this role - i was fortunate enough to see the original Mallu movie "Manichithrathazhu" ( btw - what does it mean ?) and i think Shobana was excellent ( a natural beauty and an excellent dancer) , Jyothika merely copied it for Tamil audience , albeit a good copy .

'manichithrathazhu' or Mani-chithra-thazhu is a descriptive name for the lock that was used to lock in nagavalli's spirit in that haunted room.

Manichitrathazhu had one of the best screenplays written in Indian cinema. But the author/script writer Madhu Muttom got really screwed by Fazil the original director. Fazil who knew he had a masterpiece story in his hand took the remake rights in all languages along with the screenplay from Madhu for a few Rupees. Madhu was not compensated financially at all for the successful remakes and had to go to court for it. :x
